Trying to find someone in New England that knows how to replace the clutch in my 1969 Ghia Auto Stick. I have all the parts, I just need to find a shop. Anyone have a suggestion?

-Also John at John's Car Corner in Westminster, VT.
Both gentlemen are well into "senior citizen" status but have been around and working on VWs for decades.

Spent the day working on the KG. I found a decent fuel filler hose to correct the aftermarket EMPI tank fill and vent connections. I used a filler hose from a Mercury Tracer/Ford Escort that had a slight angle on the end. I just needed to trim a little over an inch from the long end and it fits nicely.

Then a full brake job front and rear. I got German Zimmerman rotors and drums from FCP Euro for $30 each and Ate wheel cylinders for like $11. The pads, shoes and hoses came from M&T.

The brake fluid that was in there was so trashed, black and who knows how long it had been in there. Nice to have it flushed and bled properly with fresh DOT3 brake fluid.

Started fitting in my upholstery pieces to see if any adjustments needed to be made. Started with the dash pads. Since I had to originally redrill the holes for the upper pad, a still had to do a little filing to adjust for the extra material. Came out pretty good once I got everything lined up.

More to do on the door panels. Got my Newton carpet in yesterday as well. Will show that on my build page.

Your car is simply immaculate. I love the burlwood appearance on your dash face and really digging the tachometer in place of the clock.

Thank you Sir. It might look immaculate in pics, photo skills(!) but not in person, I have parts and tools all over the inside, within reach of course!

The burlwood is 3M DINOC vinyl material. The tach is from ISP West, I just hope I wired it right and it appears to function!

Appreciate the compliment though from someone with a lot of history.

Started on the underside cleaning after a few days of recovering from a week at Watkins Glen. Stage one was a a valve adjustment and a oil change. The oil wasn't too bad so at least the PO kept up on that. Several hours trying to clean the dirt, grime and oil on the 50+ years on the gearbox. Getting there.

Tomorrow will be a gearbox oil change. I went with CRC Stalube 85/90 GL-4 dino oil I chose from researching our forum at Napa. I had to order it but should be there in the morning.

Finished up the gear oil drain and fill. I used the CRC Stalube GL-4 Hypoid dino oil. I read the gear oil thread on here and wow that was entertaining to say the least with all the GL-4/GL-5 arguments. I figured if the oil that I drained lasted 52 years, why would I change the recipe?

The oil that came out looked black and just old, probably never been changed ever. No contaminates in the drain pan and only a quick swipe with a rag on the magnets. It shifted fine up and down so just a maintenance procedure for me.

I used a simple hand squeeze pump transfer pump to fill the box directly from the gallon container.

And just like that, the Cibie H4 repros showed up today so I had to get those in. Let there be light! Cool I did find out the seals behind the rings were broken and crusty so those came off and new ones ordered.

Been almost a year since I drove it, so I fixed the brake fluid leak, cleaned it up, and took it for a drive.

Finding out from my Factory VW Birth Certificate that I do indeed have the original engine in my 1969, I tried to put a little buff on it. Much like the rest of this car, it is just a 3 of 10.

I call her my 35/35 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia... Going by at 35 MPH from 35 feet away, she looks pretty good... Cool

Just replacing some bumper, nose grills and signal lens grommets and seals on this car that the PO just painted right over. I pulled the bumper and towel racks and replaced those grommets and seals. Still waiting on the headlight ring seals.

Even though the paint is horrible with some rust issues, it just drives my OCD crazy when I look at rubber seals and grommets painted over by a Maaco paint job.. How does anyone do this and call it acceptable? Rolling Eyes

Installed a Retrosound radio. I actually did this several weeks ago, didn't see a need for a new thread.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I didn't have a mounting bracket, so I got creative. Ended up using a radio delete block off plate. I almost felt like a... fabrikator!

Someday I may put this radio in. Yes, it works. Just need to find knobs and a faceplate that fits without having to modify the dash trim like the dealers did.

Played with a lot of little things this week. Installed the glove box, after finally tightening down the dash pad, hooked up the dash air vents, installed hood latch. Connected hood release cable to the latch, same difficult time I had with the deck lid release cable, can't figure out why VW used that system. I got it to latch and release a few times but was a bit difficult, so kept making cable adjustments. Somehow in the process I managed to snap the head off the hold down screw...now I have to figure out how to get that out. There might just be enough meat to grab with some locking pliers and back it out...fingers crossed!

Tapped out the holes for the door sill plates. Oh yeah, decided I would try to install my windshield now that I had the dash and all under components installed...unbelievable....check out my build page to see how that went!

My wife's Wrangler has been in the shop for 3 weeks, so I've been using the Ghia as a DD. I have to keep it outside, so I had been taking the new nipple hubcaps off to keep stray cats from peeing on them and melting off the cheap a$$ chrome, but it got to be a PITA, so I came up with the idea to put shower caps on them. It looks dopey, but when I want to for a ride, I simply snatch them off, then when I get back I pop them back on. They're terry lined inside, so the caps stay nice and clean...

Continued my transmission service. Went for a drive and noticed a slight rattle in the shifter. I could touch the shifter and the rattle disappeared so I figured the bushing was gone. Took it apart and sure enough, nothing there.

Ordered and installed a new shift rod bushing and a new coupler for the rear. The coupler M&T supplied was complete garbage but luckily it has Genuine VW bushings in it so I reused my original cage with the new bushings out of the cheap kit.

Feels so much more precise and deliberate now on shifts. Honestly it made my stock shifter feel like a short throw sport shifter. It must have been really sloppy before but didn't realize it.

OK guys, moving off the reservation of original. I guess this car is too rough to ever be worth anything as original so I have moved the lighting to euro/Cal Look.

I replaced the amber bullet lenses in the front with clear bullets and went with amber topped rear lenses. It looks better to me against the white but it could be the rebel in me.

I am close to slamming this thing with a set of Fuchs 2 liter alloys and going Cal Look. What do my friends think? Am I headed down the wrong path?

I think you've convinced yourself that your car is rough, but all the pictures I see seem pretty nice. I guess you see more of it than the rest of us but I like what I see. It's a survivor. Any car that's over 50 years old and still on the road is amazing. It's yours to do whatever makes you happy but if it were mine, I wouldn't do anything that's not reversible. I'm not into the whole "patina" thing where it's not real but true honest patina is great.

Thanks for the advice guys. Maybe I'm just trying to relive my youth in SoCal. I did pull the trigger on a set of polished factory Fuchs 2L alloys but will hold off on dropping it and mounting the wheels until it becomes a little more clear on my direction for this car.

There is nothing more I would like than for mine to be as clean as the cars you guys really admire and build, but this car would take $20,000 in panel welding and paint before it even passes the litmus test.

I guess the real issue here is that I have been bitten by the KG bug again and wanting something I just can't have.
