1972 bug just started running 3000 rpm but can't get over 50 mph. Engine is 1776 with dual ict. 009 distributor. New plugs. New plug wires. Starts fine. Idle very rough. Feels like no advance. Plugs look fine. Use to run 70mph at less than 3000rpm |

Sounds like a slipping clutch. If you remove dist. cap grab the rotor and give it a twist, does it spring back? You are required to add a couple of drops of oil when ever the felt pad (under rotor, center of shaft) looks dry or the advance mech. will lock up. |

No matter how poorly it runs, a set RPM in a set gear will always produce the same speed unless the clutch is slipping. |

So, you're advising him to challenge himself by putting it in 4th gear? That's a little bit funny, but at the same time.......... _________________ '73 super. |

I suggest carbs are not synchronized with each other and/or full throttle cannot be reached because of linkage issues. _________________ '73 super. |

What's funny about that? Unless the dude in fact is running in 3rd and didn't shift to 4th gear...in which case there is a greater concern for ones mental health.
But like Pruneman said...no mater how crappy your motor is running...a motor that rotates at 3000rpm at 70mph in a certain gear, will continue to run rotate at 3000rpm at 70mph in that same gear, unless the clutch is slipping.

If you didn't torque your rear axel nut to 220 ft/lbs the splines in the brake drum have stripped and soon you won't be able to go forward or backward at any RPM. |

Years ago when it snowed in Pensacola and our street was frozen, I put my old Volvo in 4th while doing about 15 mph and floored it — had to buy another Speedo.
Prumeman is spot on — old timers used to say the best way to test for slipping clutch was to put the car in high and floor it at slow speed. |

And the fix was.... .
Tach was dying(vdo). Found similar issue on a rod web site. Guy with 32 ford had same issue. Tach failing pulls down ignition system
I removed tach wire from coil and smooth idle finally able to adjust mixture. Runs with full power. Thanks for all the quick ideas on what to look for. Yes it is petronix ignitor points replacement |

3000 RPM at 70 MPH? Yeah, failing tach would've been my first guess. Unless, of course, you're running a mega freeway flyer gearbox with some super tall baja tires! _________________ "It's time you started treating people as individuals, rather than mathematically predictable members of an aggregate set, regardless of how well that works." |
