Which way does the early shift plate go? Tab up to the right or tab down to the right???
There is no small tab on this plate currently I have it up on the right but have no third or fourth gear also motor won’t turn over guess my clutch is stuck?

Or Bug but same idea, front of car is toward the right side of this photo:
No 3rd or 4th gear... Maybe another issue?
Bad or wacky rear shift coupler?
Rear shift coupler bolts should be perfectly in line with each other, in case you have some crappy reproduction
In line good
Offset bad

So I got it right! I’ve used the bay window 2nd gear alignment and have no 3/4 gears motor won’t turn over ….yep something is messed up underneath start over back to the drawing board 😑

Just an update we checked the coupler no issues so swapped the old style shift plate for a nos one pulled the motor and started messing about with the adjustment got reverse 2nd 3rd 4th lost 1st ? Some more fine tuning required!

Did you install the correct shiftrod bracket? Mustache looking M bushing not the plastic type.

This is the same issue I faced on my ‘59 SC. Finally, I said f-it and bought the m spring from Europe and used the OG bracket (as factory intended). Works like it should.
If you don’t use the correct pieces, the degree of offset might not be enough to notice but enough to affect shifting.

I’m not exactly sure what you mean by m bracket
The shifter was loosely attached when I got the van to get it in neutral I haven’t messed with anything else just the plate
The bus shifter in bug is really cool btw👍

Looks stock the plastic parts didn’t fit I had this issue with the 56 and used a quick shift kit ..
so tried that now I have 1st 2nd reverse it will slide over to third fourth but won’t engage ether gear do you have a part number for the M piece

Depends on the year of the bus. I dont believe M-spring was used all the way through 60 |

Turns out the panel is a July 59 build (1960 registration) so even though it’s a tunnel trans bus it’s got that m bracket and it’s in good shape that other piece referred to in this thread I haven’t located yet so might be awol there’s a lot of play in the old coupler a the transmission end so I’m going to change that part next
