Thanks,
Maybe I got the wrong one. I'll try again. It's the rounder version and the dude I got it from at the Bugorama swap meet said it came out of his 67 Westy. |

Good questions, I am sure of the intended use for all of the tools.
For my '63, here's the list:
The larger socket is for the spark plugs and jack and lug bolts as mentioned
The smaller socket is for ? I can't think of anything specific I would use that for myself on the side of the road. Battery connections maybe?
It says 14mm but I wonder if it's 13mm since most everything is 13mm instead of 14mm in 1963.
The screwdrivers - Carb tuning for sure plus anything else you needed.
The pliers... just anything in general as a sort of universal tool? |
In case it hasn't been said before, I believe that the 14 mm "socket wrench" in the tool kit is used to crack loose and remove the 14 mm brass main jet carrier assembly on the driver side of most earlier carburetors, in case you had plugged jet or needed to drain the carb bowl.
Does anyone know offhand when that brass jet carrier changed over to 13 mm in the later carbs (year or model of carb)? There seem to be a 14 mm and a 13 mm "socket wrench" tool...

Here are a few of my extra jacks that I've been cosmetically cleaning up on my workbench...
Closest to me is the "reinforced" round-headed Bilstein that I bought a few weeks ago at "Funfest" and that I just cleaned up, in the middle is the jack going back into my '67 Westfalia, and in the background is an extra Bay Bus era jack that will soon get the treatment.
I think that all of my Transporters now have their era-correct jacks...

'67 bus jack would have had the anti-tip as the top one in your picture has. Did the middle one come with your '67 Westy? |

Yes, but I bought the Bus back in 1984 and "if" it isn't correct it may have been switched before I bought the Bus. The Bus is also a mid-year Jan 1967 production Transporter. I thought the jack thread in the FAQ said that the anti-tip style didn't start until the Bay win shield models?

Bought from original owner a Tourist delivery June '67 with anti-tip. Bought form original owner a late October '67 with anti-tip. What does progressive refinements say? Shouldn't you be working on your blinker? |

When using the bay window style jack on a split window bus the jack will be at a funky angle; I believe the angle of the bay window jackpoints are different to compensate for the "improvment" in the jack; Wondering if some 67's had slightly different jackpoints? _________________ WANTED:

Using my anti-tip jack nothing is abnormal angled on the '67s except, of course, you can't jam the column into the body. The closest it will get is with the rubber bumper touching if it's almost all the way up.
If you've ever had the bus tip on the can-tip jack and the jack punch into the body then you can see why they made that safety improvement. |

I looked at the jacks that I have and find 3 Bilsteirn similar to the pictured jacks that started this thread almost 11 years ago. But all 3 differ from each other and have some different features than the ones originally pictured. Has anyone found any more identifying features that can help place them in the propper year range? Variations include the "reinforcement" around the head, "Made in Germany" on the fold-out portion, "VW" on the fold-out, the 2 different base styles shown in the pic.
Any new info will be appreciated. |

re the 14 mm socket- I thought this socket was for adjusting the clutch - for the pre wing nut era. _________________ the invisible and the non existent look very much alike |

That jack with the handle is late Bay/early Vanagon I believe.
My 79 Westy had a jack with built in handle.

Final "wrong forum" question, since you recognize the late type... the one I'm looking at seems to have a round shaft that would fit a round jack point socket, not the square socket I see on every other VW I've ever seen. Maybe late Buses used a round socket? Doesn't seem safe to me. |

I have a 1980 Mercedes 300D that uses a round shaft, crank handle Bilstein jack similar to the one in the picture. And no, it doesn't feel safe, I've never used it. |

The Bilstein jack on the right is from a low mileage 52 single cab 20-38162. I believe it to be original to the bus.
It has a VW logo on the arm. Big head rivet pivot. Part number AB777, thin pressed base, arched Bilstein lettering, and no grease port on the head
The jack on the left is from a 4/60 deluxe.

^^^That RIGHT jack is earlier w/o grease fitting, but I think your barndoor should have a Vigot/Bilstein unit. I think the Vigot is 57/58 and earlier. _________________ WANTED:
