I've been looking for my next project for awhile, and here she is... My son wanted a VW bus, but I didn't, so we got a 71 VW standard instead. The plan is to build it into a rallycross car along the lines of a Class 11 VW. Now granted we are in TN so there aren't many (or maybe any) Class 11s near us, but we figured we'd give it a go.

The backstory is the guy we bought it from has multiple projects including another VW. He took the body off to repair the pans, then decided to paint it. Well it ended up getting pushed aside for other projects, and he put it up for sale.

We borrowed a tow bar from a local air cooled VW member and had a slow trip home.

EDIT: how do I get my pics in my post and not in my gallery?

Removing the engine from the yellow car and putting it in the gray one? Nice find and good luck.

Oh wow! If I could find one in that nice I would make a restoration/street driver out of it! To heck with beating the crap out of it off road!

He learned how to use some tape and spray paint, as I taught him that chrome (in most situations) is evil.

We also gave it a bath. As you can see from a previous post and the last pic of the roof there was a nice layer of dirt on top of the primer.

Got the body off the pan.

My helper taking out the speaker and old nasty door panel (he’s already been warned about the choice of footwear)

And one of the “shop” dog

Where I work at, those are called Bulgarian welding shoes. Also known as a way to kill 10 minutes at the first job every day.

Sounds like a good and fun plan. Unless you'll be out in the desert smashing on rocks and gullies, Class 11 is probably overkill for rally cross and the center of gravity will be a lot higher. A stock bug with M+S tires and gas charged shocks will do well in muddy fields and gravel roads. I'd run a stock exhaust for ground clearance and make sure the lower sheet metal is in place on the motor to protect the push rod tubes. There's a lot of hard turning so using windage push rod tubes that stick a bit farther into the case will help keep the oil from piling up in the valve covers.

Thanks Frenchroast

I guess we are technically building it Class11 style because unless we win the lottery there is no way we can build the cage to Class11 specs and run Baja.

@stevebaz I promised it to him when he was a newborn.

With life, school, sports, and work keeping us busy the pan finally got primed and the rear got painted. And shop dog turned into farmer dog.

Worked a little on the brakes today. Master cylinder pushrod just fell out while I was removing it so it will be replaced. Is there a recommended master for stock drum brakes?

And the exterior of my drums are crusty, but I assume if the internals are within spec the exterior can be sanded and hit with a coat of paint or two. Is that correct?
