I recently scored my first VW single cab and am currently going through the truck to fix minor problems. My gas gauge seems to be stuck on "E" but recently I figured out this "E" the needle is covering is really a "R". However, my truck does not have the Reserve nobs under the seat. My Samaba digging tells me the "R" was for earlier year trucks, not my 1962. Any idea why I have a "R" on the gauge but no Reserve tank control knobs under the seat? Thanks |

All VW gauges use R in place of E, it means you are into the reserve area of the tank and better get some gas soon.
As for the stuck gauge try grounding the wire attached to the middle terminal on the sender and see if the gauge pegs to full (1/1), if it does you have sender problems, if it doesn't the issue may be up front. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

When you turn the key on does the needle flicker at all? |

you really do not need a gas gauge AND a reserve knob. _________________ regards

Do you want to troubleshoot the gauge part first? |

Ok. Can you remove the gauge by carefully pulling the light out and the wires off the back. Then unscrew the knurled nuts all the way, remove the mounting/grounding bar and pop the gauge out. |

Have you tried hitting the gauge with the key on?
Can you post a photo of the front and behind the gauge without removing it? |

I have not, work and a sick toddler have me sidelined from the truck at the moment. I will report back after I give it a wallop. Thanks for you time and insight thus far. |
