I taught my son how to drive manual and after a while the shifting starting acting up so I went through the alignment process several time but couldn't get it to shift properly. I figured he muscled through a shift and broke something so I took apart the shifter assembly and checked all of the parts and tabs in the shifter housing but could never get it to work.
Never thought to check the shifter ball.
Apparently it fractured and the ball slid up the lever. No wonder it wasn't shifting.
I have it back and readjusted everything but still have a slight problem with reverse. The new shifter lever gear tab is slightly more "open" which I think is throwing it off. Might have to try and bend the gear connection tab slightly toward the main body to make it align to the original better.
So, check your ball! _________________ 1986 Westy |

This can happen because the socket is not fully upwards and so the shallow angle of the socket pulling on the ball causes it to bind. If the boot is broken the socket can get dirty and bind. More likely things are old and worn. The bushing that holds up the sliding rod can be worn, causing the rod and therefore the ball to drop beyond its ideal angle. The mount of rod holder can fall to its lowest position, or be poorly installed. The socket needs to be held up vertical in it’s neutral position to fully engage the ball, then the two bolts tightened.
Also you should take a close look at those splines. It may have been loose and vibrating, which hammers the splines. Always make sure that lever is securely bolted onto the selector shaft. _________________ Vanagon ’83 diesel AAZ w/Giles injection, 5spd 4.57R&P+TBD and a '78 diesel Rabbit |
