Hello,
I have a new to me 72 Super Beetle. It was a basket case that I have just about completed as far as the lights go. Two elude me. The passenger side rear driving light and the license plate light. My questions are: Are these lights connected, will my license plate light interfere with the driving light? What else could it be?

Thanks

The license plate light is fed by the right tail light. Fix one and the other will also work.

The grey/red wire runs from fuse #1 all the way to the multi-wire junction tucked behind the tar paper on the right side of the engine. Here it connects to a solid grey wire that runs to the taillight assembly as well as a grey/blue wire. This grey/blue wire makes its way to the license plate light assembly. Along the way, the wire will meet up with a brown ground wire. The grey/blue and brown wires run all the way to the license plate light. It is important that the correct wires run to the correct connectors at the license plate lamp. It is possible to wire the grey/blue hot wire to the case of the license plate light assembly which could ground it, shorting out the circuit.

If both the right taillight and the license plate light are out, it likely means a break in the circuit before it reaches the junction or the fuse has blown.
If you wire the parking lights exactly how the stock wiring diagram shows, all the parking light except the left rear will all be on one fuse. The left rear parking light is all by itself on a single fuse (#2). But often, POs will swap the wires around and the right rear + license plate will end up on their own fuse. So check the #1 and #2 fuses and make sure they are good. Try swapping then to see if different lights stop working.
