Here is my humble solution to the inadequate original Vanagon rear view mirror. I attached one side of an old door hinge to the area just above the ash tray on the dash. (My '84 Camper never had a speaker there.) Then attached the other side of the hinge to a small scrap of wood. (The hinge is so you can raise and lower the new mirror). I then placed a spring on a long screw with a wing nut.
The spring provides tention so that the up and down movement of the hinge stays put, and is adjustable. I then mounted a cool mirror I bought at a VW show to the top of the piece of wood. The mirror can rotate left and right. So the whole setup has up/down, left/right adjustability.
I still have the old mirror to see out short distances, but with my new mirror, I can to infinity and beyond.

A bit crude, but if it works… _________________ “Most everyone’s mad here. You may have noticed I am not quite all there myself.” — Cheshire Cat, Adventures of Alice in Wonderland

I bought a glue on windshield mirror at your flaps, and glued it about 8 inches down from the top of the windshield. Now I can see more than 20' out the back of van. (It has air conditioning)
Looking back has never looked better!
I have the same but went one step farther into the 21th century and bought a Gentex mirror off feabay. It has auto dim, outside temp and a compass built in. I think its off a GMC vehicle. I think I payed about 60 bucks for it. I love having it down lower and the auto dim really works great beyond my expectations. You can even get them with the back up camera screen in them. I didn't need that but that is a great place to have it . sorta the natural place you would look backing up. it looks kind of big in the picture but I really don't notice any visibility issues driving.
It is glued on. The black piece that looks like a stem simply hides the wiring and is flush with the windshield.
Auto dim is great, outside temp is nice to know , compass is some what useless.
