I was cleaning out the shop last night and found a pair of spindles with part #'s 211-405-312-A and 211-405-311-A. Any idea what year they are? _________________ OGST

Ha! Same scenario. Same part numbers. I think they are “late” (64-67). _________________ One man's "patina" is another man's cancer...

Thanks. Never thought of that. But these are king & linkpin units. _________________ One man's "patina" is another man's cancer...

Partnumber is all there just written incorrect.
Number should be 211 405 311 A and 211 405 312 A.
That would be second generation baywindow spindles. (given the A) |

I think 301/302 are split bus spindle part numbers and 311/312 are Bay spindle part numbers.
I'd ask the same question in the Bay Forum. |
I agree
You could also post pics.
Here is a late split parts list online:

Did Not disc brakes start on Bays in 1971??
Maybe Bays used Split spindles until then??
I "think" bays used 1 ton split spindles through 70', Not sure but would like to know, or did they change the spindle in 68, then fit up disc's in 71? _________________ kaiser kills kids.com |

I posted pics in my album. A buddy gave these to me years ago.
I’m a T3 guy and have limited experience in T2 world. I’m looking to lower my ‘66 SO42 only because I want it more driver friendly. Not slamming it. Looking to do a minimal 3.5” drop...resulting from the install of a swing axle tranny. _________________ One man's "patina" is another man's cancer...

From the Bay Window forum:

The spindles (aka steering knuckles) that localboy has just posted pictures of in his gallery are
clearly not those from any bay window bus. |

I don't know the answer but here's my post from the Bay thread:
The online late Split Bus parts book says the spindles are part #
211 405 301 D
211 405 302 D
for 64-67 Buses
(Mentioned above and Clara posted a photo link too)
211 405 312 are in the Bay Window parts book.
C and E are listed as someone said above.
My guess: They are Bay because of the part # but the question is what year.
I would guess A is the same application as C in this case.
Bay Parts book, #4 and #5
#5 - Part number with E suffix looks like disc brakes, right? _________________ How to Post Photos

Thanks, Everett.
All interesting. You all can see my confusion. I also realize the history of VW and part numbers is not always accurate.
My limited understanding is busses thru ‘67 were king/link pin and ‘68 and up were ball joint. Again, I’m no expert. I’m just reading and researching via various sources. To my untrained eye, these are king/linkpin. _________________ One man's "patina" is another man's cancer...

According to HIS pictures, those are the Split Bus Spindles I am familiar with. They look like 1 ton (64 & up) I have 3 pairs sitting on my bench. The bay spindles are quite different. I just don't know IF VW used split Spindles up to 1970. None of my part numbers match his. Anywho, he has the correct spindles for his Camper. Now, send them off to Campingbox to get rebuilt. _________________ kaiser kills kids.com |

I just called my buddy. He didn’t remember but says if he gave them to me, they were from a ‘60 DC that he owns. He put other dropped spindles on. The mystery thickens. _________________ One man's "patina" is another man's cancer...

I located this add here. The spindles look to be the same as what I have and the part number looks to be the same (enlarged) as far as I can tell looking at it on an iPad.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2448081
Also from looking at other adds, my buddy appears correct in his 1960 guess; they look to be “earlies” as the shaft is thicker with no taper. Campingbox has several good pics in his ads. _________________ One man's "patina" is another man's cancer...

I just noticed the original "poster" of this thread has not chimed in. No response-zip. The diff in Split is 20mm then the later 1964 22mm 1 ton. Smaller earlies. Only 4 years on the 1 ton spindles, the rest is a mystery.
All my 1 ton spindles do not have the STEP, just a taper with larger Link and king pins _________________ kaiser kills kids.com |

Those spindles are from ‘55-‘61ish or so and will fit 55-63 buses and trucks. At some point they went from 10mm grease fittings to 8mm grease fittings. |

Would they “fit” a ‘66 front suspension?
My reasoning: I would like to keep the original ones in case I ever sell the bus. The OG reduction tranny & spring plates and stock spindles will then go with it, in case the new owner wants a stock height camper. _________________ One man's "patina" is another man's cancer...

55-63 spindles won’t fit a ‘66 without shifting some parts around. The early spindles use 20mm linkpins and the later ones use 22mm. The kingpins need to match the linkpins. The linkpins need to match the trailing arms. The trailing arms need to match the beam. |
