if the insulation fails then they can test fine but ground out. Also one should watch not to combine a resistor rotor, resistance wires, and resistor plugs. |
Agreed. The insulation looks fine. New, supple, no cracks. That being said, I'm not going to rule anything out at this point. HA HA |

Last time I'll say it. Figure out whether one cylinder or all are dropping out. Then figure out whether fuel/air, compression, or spark is missing. If all drop out evenly that rules out a bad wire or bad cap, plugs etc., but not the electronic ignition.
Had a Open GT engine begin to misfire like that once on a trip. Tried everything, spent hours looking for the problem. Plugs were new. Turned out to be a bad batch of NGK plugs. Put the old ones I still had with me back in, and it purred. Took me years to trust NGK again but that, Denso, and Champion are about all I use today. My money is on either a bad ignition system somewhere from the electronic ignition to wires, or a vacuum leak. |
I will 100% be doing that test this weekend when I go back out to work on it! I’ll be sure to post an update about what I find. |
let us know. It makes finding the issue a lot easier.
Tell us, how did you test the plug wires?

SGKent is a god amongst men. I did the test, and it was cylinder #1. I pulled the plug and there was NO GAP. I gapped the plug per NGK specs and the surging / misfire is gone! THANK YOU! _________________ North Bay Air Cooled - VW Club in Napa, CA

check your carb to see if a throttle plate screw or the center brass nozzle has fallen out. Something probably hit that plug. If it is still rattling around the cylinder it can happen again.
Get one of these, plug into a laptop and look into the cylinder to be sure nothing is pounding around in there. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PBF6DX5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

I will be pulling the carb. I'll inspect is carefully. I also got the scope.
I ran the engine, let it warm up, and revved to see if the problem would return. The scope till be great to make sure there is nothing in the cylinder. I don't want this problem to return. _________________ North Bay Air Cooled - VW Club in Napa, CA

Hey all,
Just some closure on this - once the plug actually had a gap to jump, the engine went back to running decently, the way it used to. The carb still needs some work but all in all, good to go. Thanks to all who posted up and helped us out.
PS - next time, we'll check the simple stuff first
