So what are we saying now? a 36hp cam will not work well in a 25hp engine? I didn't want the fiber gear on the 25hp cam. I found a nice NOS LMB brand 36hp cam that is marked +1. I was going to use that? I also have an almost NOS set of 36hp rockers I was going to use??

Last question for now?? oil pump? I think I read that the 25hp pump had 17mm gears and others are using 26mm?? do they have 6mm studs or 8mm studs?

The cam is fine. That's was VW sold as a spare part for the 25hp once they ran out of the 25hp cams.

You can only use the +1 cam if the case requires it because it is out of spec to use the standard size.

36hp rockers are the same as is the oil pump.

Does anyone know the size of the 25hp oil coolers bolts? are they 6mm or 8mm?

Interesting topic. The 52-57 workshop manual specifically addresses this issue and list all the parts they didn't consider interchangeable. The crankshaft, flywheel and gland nut are not the same for both engines. I found out this for myself when getting parts mixed up for a rebuild.

Should have added, here are the parts the manual says are not interchangeable:

engine case
cylinder head
pistons and cylinders
intake valves
crankshaft pulley
fan belt
carb
intake manifold
distributor

no mention of camshaft so they must be the same
