Where did you buy those rear bumper mounts? They look way too thin of metal.

I bought one from CIP1 that was AutoCraft, and it was not made with the proper gauge metal. Should be much thicker than the metal it mounts to on the body. I can't tell you the gauge but should be around 1.2 mm or thicker. Virtinen makes good ones.

Something to check!

They are Autocraft. Did not even consider checking the thickness. Damnit! I assumed….. Nevermind. Yes, they and I are asses!

Ordering from Mika! Thanks for checking in on me! It is, what makes this website, great!

I don't think even stock mounts could handle the weight of the pan and body, you need to ditch the weight and just have the body on the rotisserie

Yep! That’s what I am thinking, as well. But I will say that the front stock points did not change in anyway. Really has me wondering. Regardless, going to get a set from Mika, weld those in and keep moving forwards!

Thanks Jellyman! You know the drill, 2 steps forward, 1 step backwards! You picking up on what I am laying down!

That’s okay though. It will be corrected soon!

An update, Awesome!
A minor set back, Not so awesome. But you live and learn.

I have a question.
One of my bumper mount weld nuts is stripped and needs to be replaced.
I can't remember if you have done this on the build.
But how would you tackle replacing the Fd up weld nut, without removing the bumper mount under the rear fender?
Section the mount and weld in a new/recycled bit from another car?
Or is there a sensible solution that I haven't found yet?

Anyway, keep it up. I am following along! Even if no one else is.

Edit: I didn't refresh the thread when I posted this. Please ignore the bold print above! Apparently, there are folks reading along. Very Happy

Thanks man!

A blind weld nut is hard to do but can be done very easily. You can go from the back or the front, up to you. I would cut a rectangle section out about 3/4” past center along the long sides and about 1/2” on the short side. Leave 1 short side uncut. Then fold that steel out just enough to get the steel clean and a nut on the back of it. From there take a brass bolt and thread a copper nut onto it. Get a brass washer to. Then slide those on the bolt, slide the bolt through the outside of the hole so that there are threads showing on the back side. Then tread the weld nut onto the treads that are showing. All the way (you do not want hot sparkles sticking to the treads! Then weld the 4 corners of the weld nut onto the folded back steel. Once down cool it down. Once cool, bend that flap back into position and weld that into place. Grind it down and prime it! Remove the bolt. Done!

Hope that was clear. If you need it, I could mock it up for you. I have a blond nut that needs to get reattached to the Bug.

Good luck! Hope that helped!

If I'm understanding correctly.

Cut the weld nut on the bracket on three sides. Fold it out. and remove the f'd up weld nut.

Using a brass bolt and nut threaded on it from the bumper bracket side. Add the new metal nut and another brass nut to protect the threads.
Weld the nut in place and remove the brass nut on the back side of the bumper bracket.
Fold the whole mess back in place and with the brass bolt still installed in the new nut. Weld the three sides of the folded portion back in place.
Grind and dress the weld bead and paint!

What could possibly go wrong? Shocked

Thank you for the instructions.

Glad to see you -back- at it.. Embarassed

Still,
Having a tweaked back sucks and blows. BTDT.

Maybe find some other parts of the car to work on besides hoisting a body until you heal up? Shocked

Certainly you could find something else needs done on it..

Hey Clatter! My back is almost back to 100%. Been laying low and only swinging the hammer when I need to. Hard to do, but I am doing it!

Yes, a tweaked back is no fun. I watched my father work through 40 years with a screwed up back. There were days that he would just flinch wrong and he would go down! Thankfully I never pole vaulted, so my back is in decent shape! Regardless, I am slowly learning what a middle aged man can and cannot do. Moving boats is now crossed off my list!

I agree with your thoughts. I tried to just work on a few small items, like the generator, but manage to twist just enough to make me hit the floor in shooting pain. So, instead of that routine, I sat in front of the computer and passed my IRC Building Inspector test! I am now moving forwards to get a B2 license. I also am going to take the plumbing and electrical tests as well! Studying like a madman, but thankfully it is all current in my mind and not foreign.

Saturday I will be back to the body and working my magic on it!

Thanks, brother!

Got a few hours in today, on the Bug.

Welded some steel nuts onto the OG door check rod bolts.

Then I twisted the welded studs out.

And here they are.

I then finished up the welding of the trunk floor. Man, the rusty steel is SO HARD to weld! But I got it done! Even the corners inside the Abyss!

YA, there's a point where rust-pitted thin metal just goes poof! and blows away..

IME, if it will survive a strong sandblasting without opening up holes,
It's OK to use a skim of filler to reinforce.

I use that reinforced Metal-2-Metal stuff just for giggles to fill rust pits - but just a thin skim in the pits only because it really sucks to sand.

And that's only if you chased the last of the little rust bits out of the bottom of the pits,
And gave it a bit o' phosphoric..

Otherwise,
Man,
It's that -last- little tit of rust in the bottom of a rust pit that will pop up and grow a bubble under the paint just a year or two later..

Thank you!

Car is going to get towed (unless I can engineer a way to do it in the garage) up to the inlaws house. They have a large side yard with alot of dirt. Then I am going to spray Ospho into all of the knooks and crannies with a wand sprayer. I have even made a dripper head tube thing that goes onto a small sump pump to insert up into the upper interior beams (where the dome light lives) and pull that thing through while spraying Ospho inside. Figured if I did that several times over the coarse of say, Thanksgiving, well, maybe the rust would go bye-bye! Wish me luck man!

The last few Bugs have had some rusted pitted areas. I brazed them and filed it smooth. Worked great! Lets see what I can get done, so that I can Ospho on Thanksgiving day!

Just out of interest and maybe for my own projects, what do you mean exactly by:

Brazing as defined by Wikipedia….. Brazing is a metal-joining process in which two or more metal items are joined together by melting and flowing a filler metal into the joint, with the filler metal having a lower melting point than the adjoining metal. Brazing differs from welding in that it does not involve melting the work pieces.

It reminds me of sweating pipes together or soldering wires by tinning the tips. It is super easy to control and shapes easily. It is not toxic like lead and will hold paint well! The one caveat is to control the heat being applied to the panel! Too much and you just made a small problem into a giant one!

On the last, last, last, last 70 Bug. There was a rust spot on the upper rear quarter panel. About 4inches long by an 1 inch. I Naval Jellied the spot, wire brushing out the rust. That left mostly fresh steel with small specs of neutralized rust. I then rolled the Bug over on an angle to get the spot somewhat level. Then heated the spot up, followed by some brass filler rod (or solder). I could build the height up at each of the pits. It was pretty cool. Once filled. I sprayed a mist of water over the area until the brass was firm. Placed a fan on it to cool the exterior side and blew compressed air at the interior side. Once cool, I used a Mill file and took the brass down to the body level. Worked great!

You can use solder as well. Either method works, up to you how you skin the cat. I just like trying stuff and seeing how it does!
