|

So upon removing the pass side rear brake drum on my '60 bus, We noticed it came off way too easy. Upon further inspection, we noticed the spindle was stripped, Making it almost impossible to tighten the nut. Any advice other than removing the whole tranny or reduction box? I've heard of files but what if there is not enough material to work on, Can some type of solder be added?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Martin

If the threads are messed up to the degree that they won't torque down, you have to replace the stub axle in most cases.
The beauty of small nut transmissions is that you can swap out the stub axle without unbolting the reduction box from the springplate. Of course you do have to split the reduction box. Overall, it is a lot easier than doing the same thing in a bignut box. _________________ .

Believe it or not, you came to mind Lind. Didn’t you have a mishap with a lost rear tire back in the day? _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

Yes, but that had to do with powdercoated rims. As long as you have a proper cotter pin in your axle nut, then it won't come off. It will eat up the splines in your brake drum if you drive it without the proper torque. _________________ .
