Just went through your entire thread. I am so impressed by your skills. Aside from the fact that there's much information here that is so useful to myself and others, I appreciate that you take the time to document, photograph and share your work. That in itself is no small task. Following your project and looking forward to seeing it complete. Thank you!

Thanks guys.

I have taken a break from the engine building. Waiting on parts to complete the top end. In the meantime I am getting the body ready to go to the body shop to get the exterior painted. I have gone ahead and painted the majority of the inside and underside/fender wells of the car.

From your photos, what you've painted looks really good (excellent really). Curious why you're not painting it all yourself. Enjoying seeing your progress.

Dan22 the color is L240 Agave. it is the original color.

Thanks VW_Jimbo. Im excited to see the whole car painted.

5500 I want the car painted professionally in a booth. The final finish will come out better and after hundreds of hours sanding I want it to look the best it can.

Beautiful build Scotty! I can't believe I haven't seen this thread yet. I keep hearing Brad talk about you and this car. I'm his friend on the other side of the bridge in Tacoma! Nice work!

Thanks troy.

The head studs are 8mm chromoly that were 1/2" longer then stock. I had to cut them down on both ends to make them the right length. the short studs are 150mm high strength studs from Grainger. Three stock length studs in the middle for comparison. The nuts and washers are from belmetric. I used special 13mm nuts that are the four silver ones for the short studs.

Custom size barrel spacers were made by RWK here on thesamba to fit the 83mm cylinders.

Push rod tubes are stock Porsche 356 cut down 5mm on the case side.

Lifters are aaperformance 2 piece lifters. I did the hoover mod to them for better oiling.

I assembled the long block. Also installed a gene berg deep sump and the oil pump with gene berg full flow pressure relief cover.

Made some solid rocker shafts. RWK drilled the holes and threaded them for me. Rockers are aaperformance 1.15:1 ratio rockers. I ground them down and clearanced them for cb performance elephant foot adjusters. pushrods are empi 5/16" and I cut them down to length. Using stock okrasa valves, stock vw retainers, keepers and jaguar dual springs. Also got a Porsche chromoly scat gland nut.

Nice! Like the dump truck! Reminds me of one I played with several decades back.

Great job on the rebuild. Can you share where you got the repair panels for the rear body mount and shock cut out? Or if anyone else knows where to get the correct ones for Ovals....

VW_Jimbo: the dump truck is my dads from when he was a kid.

Toxic56: the rear body mounts are original ones. I got them from another car. Looks like you can get new ones here: https://www.thesamba.com/vw//classifieds/detail.php?id=2287395
https://www.thesamba.com/vw//classifieds/detail.php?id=1383779

Got the car back from paint and got it bolted down to the pan. It still needs to be wet sanded and buffed. Also got some sound deadener on to the pan.

Thank you for the link.

Your car is looking great. I love the color. I had a 56 agave canadian standard several years ago and really like the color!

I tried that 6V H4 LED setup. It does not work! Let me know if you have better luck but will tell you a couple things I found:
1. The light output is so bad. I mean, 6V euro headlights can be a joke, but H4 LED's are literally just to fill the hole. Zero useful light output.
2. For some reason the LED H4's I found bleed Voltage between the circuits. The high/ low beams are both always on to some extent. I tried a couple different bulbs from different suppliers. They all did it. In or out of the car.

What I eventually did was remove the glass covers from those H4's and use the reflectors w/ 6V Halogen H4 bulbs. That combo actually works quite well.!

Thanks for the input nub. I was thinking that they should be better then 6v sealed beam bulbs. If they don’t work out I was going to try the h4 halogen bulbs.

I have been wet sanding and buffing the paint and doing some assembly. Got the wiring harness ran and the dash put together. Both doors are mechanically assembled. Engine compartment tar boards installed and will be working on getting the engine in next.
