Friends mom has a 68 titled bug with a 65 ish vert body on top. Needs restoration but complete. Was trying to help her value it. Obviously 4 lug axles, and I know little more about it. But curious to all those out there, if you think, besides originality, how much this hurts or helps the value of her vert.
Thanks

Depends. Hurts deep it if you want to sell to an originality fan.
May help if its a daily driver, may not, depending on what they are looking for.
I'd check that the heater channels have the correct reinforcements for a vert body, though I'm not sure just what those differences are. |

Yeah I've got a vert here I can compare. Good note. Yeah 10-4 on originality. But might drive and stop better too. |

Hey Tony, I used to watch you all the time on Taxi!
Sounds like a bonus to me: some people go out of their way to give '68-ons the earlier look, that one's got the best of both worlds. The body reinforcements for a 'vert are part of the body, so those would've come over with the body to the '68 pan. |

You will end up with long axles in the back and four lug wheels. Assuming the engine and trans came with the pan then the engine will be a 1500 or 1600 instead of the 1200 and the transmission will be geared for that motor. You will have ball joints instead of link pins and king pins in the front. From a purely mechanical point of view, it is definitely an upgrade.
Value will take a hit though. But, if it's all solid, you would have a nice driver. _________________ Chris

When I said the "best of both worlds" earlier, I may have inadvertently overstated that a smidge; I was mistakenly thinking that '68 pan brought IRS with it, but I was just having a 56-year-old brain fart...I had a '68 convertible, so I should've recalled better. Of course, the following year came the "floating" axles.
In any case, you do get the BJ front end, as mentioned earlier. In all honesty, I prefer link-pin front knuckles myself, they're easier to take apart during servicing. Also, on the BJ front end, when it's time for new ball joints, you really need to pay close attention to the cup's outer diameters and have somebody familiar with the interference situation to press them - if they're forced in due to oversize cups, they'll just bind like a bitch and have to be redone. |
