I think one of the best parts of this build is that no splits/ovals were harmed. In fact, everything is 100% new metal |

Thank you very much for the photos of W30 cars. Some of them I had not seen before. Truly appreciated!
Just a comment, if I may, on the first photo you posted. The car in the photo is not of the W30 series but is actually the third of the four cars that were made in 1935. The photo itself is most likely from 1935 because by1936 it already had a facelift with the headlights moved to the front fenders and the cooling slots on the rear lid increased in number and size.
The car has been known as the V1 and had the first all steel construction body. Later it became known as the V3/3. I think that is why it was photographed with the first of the W30 series in front of the Porsche villa in 1937 to showcase the evolution of the all steel construction body.
Here you can see the same car photographed from the rear in 1935.
And here in 1937, about a year after the body modifications, posing together with the first of the W30 cars.

Thank you for sharing this great build. Can I ask the method used to put the louvers in? Did they make a die and press them in or a different method?
Also, I know the current engine is for mockup, is there information on what the original drivetrain was? Similar to a KDF era car? |
For the drivetrain check out my earlier thread https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=343304
It is similar but not the same. The team still has a lot of fabrication ahead of them. The engine was also different in many details so for now they will have to use a KdF era one but who knows what will happen in the future.
I'm about to post more photos. Some will show how the louvers were punched into the sheet-metal. _________________ Check out my Facebook page: Volkswagen Prototypes. |

A little step back in the timeline. Here are more photos of how the louvers were cut into the engine lid. It takes a steady hand to make those cuts!

The main fire wall panel being installed. Of course another one will be made to sit above this one that will incorporate the rear window glass.

When we look carefully at period photos of the W30 cars you can see the license plate is actually placed (painted) on a raised section of the body. This is a detail entirely missed on the existing replicas. Here are photos of car 14 and car 13 showing this detail. Car 13 of course has been essential in figuring out many of the obscure details. It was sliced in half and presented to interested persons to showcase the all-steel construction of the body. As a result the photos of this half-car show many details normally not visible.
You can really see the profile in this photo

Just perfect! How many of us missed the licence plate surround, if the previous replica builders didn't see it, I'm sure a lot of us didn't either.
Fantastic details, making this as authentic as possible. _________________ When I think of something to say - I'll be the first to know

And some more of the firewall still without the part where the inner window will be.

Those air slots are getting more and more beautiful. Also work has started on the fenders. The team decided to regular Beetle fenders as base to get the shape and then modify the hell out of them to achieve the W30 look. There are extensions being added to the fenders on the inside as the W30 did not have front and rear aprons as on later cars but the fenders extended to the middle of the body.

Smart move on the fenders.
You can already see how much more accurate this body is compared to the red and blue ones that VW had made. _________________ Chris

my exact same impression. the VW-owned repros are clearly too much wide and long. _________________ cars:

I feel weird seeing the front fender before it is properly "converted". Feels like surprising my grandpa in his underwear Anyway, I take they are adjusting one from each side, and then will just "mirror" the other one to the same specs?
Did the restoring team sourced the final headlights? I'm really curious to know where the originals came from, they have such a distinctive look to them! |

I'm sure that's what's going to happen. As you can see they have finished the left door and also now working on both left fenders. Once everything looks good they'll repeat it all on the right.
As for the headlights, I don't know for 100% but my guess is those are generic units from Bosch and would not be too difficult to locate. I never understood why the blue one at Autostadt has those weird bulbous headlights as used on some American cars of the time.
Also note how the headlight is gently sunk into the fender at the lower part. Beautiful!
