Progress!
Patrick and I adjusted the brakes so we can roll it around.
They had gotten tight from sitting so long
Feels good to actually do something useful |
Awesome!
Do you have what you need for the hinge, or are you in need of more? _________________ Jimbo

I am not sure what you are talking about. |
Excellent answer! I thought I was responding to a glove box hinge reply. Do not even know how my response was inserted here! WOW!
Sorry man! That is weird. _________________ Jimbo

Got any tips on telling it it is original paint?
I basically figure you look in all the hard to reach places for a different color, since most painters would skip them since you can't see them.
Any other tips? |
If you open up the heater mufflers in the back seat area you will almost certainly find original paint colour, unaffected by sunlight fade. Just bend open two of the tabs and lift cover off. Nobody would ever paint in there. |

Very nice cars. I would love to come across an oval in that condition. I will add that the rear tail lights are to high on the fender. Given that the rear apron was replaced I bet the fenders were also. I'm not giving grief just pointing it out if you are interested in fixing mistakes. Cheers! |

Thanks but this car is 12V, wrong transmission and engine (yeah it should drive real nice)
It was my Dad's and I am just going to finish it the way he started it.
He also left me his 1967 Sunroof Bug and it is almost 100% stock!
I am in the middle of rebuilding the engine...
So many Bugs, so little time... pesky job gets in the way _________________ Tampa, FL

Congratulations!
Save up for the purchase of ALL new brake components as that car has been sitting forever with old brake fluid. Almost certainly the bottom bore of the master cylinder and all wheel cylinders will have suffered moisture pitting, not to even mention the internal rubber cups and seals. Save your lives and the lives of others on the road around you by buying and replacing all of the who-knows-how-old brake stuff! Buy new rubber front (2) and rear (2) flexible brake hoses too! Clean out your brake fluid reservoir too.
Buy a VW dealership Workshop Service Manual reproduced by Robert Bentley Publishing for your particular era of Beetle. It will guide you through all sorts of maintenance procedures in great detail with great photos and illustrations. Not cheap but definitely worth every penny spent! Perhaps you can find a used issue cheaper? These are pretty simple Beetles to work on, much easier with the Bentley manual at your side.
That is how I'd start my restoration adventure if I was in your lucky shoes. Wow! Two dry desert stored old cars! Buy a lottery ticket quick!
