Hi,

I hope someone can give me a bit of a sanity check on a couple of points.
I have a 75 westy with disks.
I have recently changed my brake MC as it was faulty. My brakes must have been working with issues for a while, blown MC seals.

I have fitted a new cylinder and bled manually with other half pressing pedal. Once done though the pedal seems to travel before anything happens, maybe a third of the way. The brakes work, stops ok etc.

Searching the forums I need to be clear in my head these points if someone who knows can help.

Couple posts from SGK
Quote:
3 average pumps on the brake pedal, hold and then you loosen the screw. Keep a hose on the bleeder into a bottle. Then you tighten before he lifts his foot to do it again.

Without a booster the brakes should be as hard as a rock to push.

I didn't know about the 3 push method.
I just had someone push when bleed valve open, hold, tighten, lift. open, push, hold, tighten lift etc but have I been doing it wrong. (and I wondered if this should go in stupid Q thread but its poss not that stupid).

Is this def 110% the right way ? (not to question you SGK but i just want to be sure).... 3 pumps first with closed bleed valve and hold pedal, then open bleed valve, hold down pedal, then close bleed valve and release pedal. Is that it?

Q2. Upper and lower bleed valves on the front, one is to drain down, one is to bleed. I made notes in my manual but then read a paragraph which contradicted my notes so I need to get this right, which one is 110% the bleed valve on front calipers.

Last Q. Becuase I have had faulty brakes for a while I don't know what 110% good should feel like.
Before start
Should it be rock hard to start, no travel.
After start
Brake booster kicks in, any travel at that point before engaging?. What should I be experiencing.?

If I have travel might it be an adjustment needed elsewhere?, I'm putting this all on brakes but maybe not. I thought disks self adjusted. I did come across this in the posts from kreemoweet but I know its not completely true

Quote:
Your pedal should never go to the floor. Means you have massive amounts of air in the system

I know it could also be faulty MC seals but assume MC is replaced it makes me think about is brake pedal travel now down to air?

As always thanks in advance

heres how I do it I have my helper pump 5 times and hold I loosen the bleeder fluid comes out as the helper is still pushing/holding I tighten the bleeder do this till no air comes out. to tell if you got it start the engine pump the peddle is if it stays the same level or pumps up if it pumps up you still have air bleed again or your rear shoes are way out of adjustment so make sure they are right before you do all this bleeding.

The reason you pump the pedal 3 times and hold before loosening is to pressurize the system including mostly air.

Thank you everyone, sanity restored Smile

Did the 5 pump manual method with my very patient other half and all 6 nipples, apparently the tops at the front are bleed but it didn't hurt to do the bottom ones as well.

End result, firm pedal with very little travel.

They say you learn something new every day, for years I have been manually bleeding brakes incorrectly.
