I did adjust the driver's side wheel bearing. I tightened it until I physically couldn't move the rotor and then backed off 1/4 of a turn. |
This may be a distraction at this point but Bentley manual calls for a play reading. I'll drop this picture here and supplement with the play spec when I'm out in the barn with the VW stuff.
My initial thought here was that a small amount of excess play at the axle might translate to something more tangible farther out at the edge of the rim. Maybe nothing but with tolerances this tight you never know. _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

Per the Bentley manual it's .001 to .005" of play. I suspect I'm in the ball park. The YouTube tutorial definitely isn't as precise though. While I don't think this is my problem it can't hurt to check. Thanks for the reminder on the Bentley manual and the picture. |

Did a little more exterior dressup on the old girl today. New retaining clips for the hood and side body mouldings and painted them black to match the fender seals. Also added clear front turn signal lenses.

I like the black trim. It was in pretty bad shape as the chrome tape or whatever was originally on it was mostly gone. Looks like brand new pieces now.
So I checked the wheel bearing and it was really close to the Bentley manual. Went ahead and adjusted it into spec and flipped the coil spring helpers so they were providing the maximum help they could. Appears to have fixed the ball joint / rim contact issue. However,.....still think I might be getting a little wheel rub at about the 9-10 o'clock position on the driver's side fender. I suspect it was slightly rolled in the past. The paint on this car is harder than woodpeckers lips so I'm afraid it will crack if I mess with it. If I could somehow roll that section of fender in 1/4" I'd be golden though. I have no rub at all on the passenger side and the front is level side to side within about 1/8". That's why I believe the fender must be flexed / rolled a little bit. |

I will have to check on this idea and see if I can adjust the rub out. Thanks for the info! |

Been a while so I thought I would give an update. Adjusted the fender and got the rub out. Currently having the interior redone. Front to back and top to bottom.

I combed through the thread a couple times and didn't see anything, but how far down do you think you went on that front suspension? and did you lower the rear at all? |

We went as far as the adjustable struts and factory coils would allow on the front. Had to put a spring rubber on the driver's side as it wanted to rub a little. Also had to grind off the extra length on the tie rod bolts (I think). The back is factory ride height as we only installed new shocks back there. It gave the car a subtle rake. I think the adjustable struts dropped the front 2". |

Thanks! Installing the headliner was a lot of work due to having to remove all of the windows but it needed to be done. |
