Hello,

I'm having some issues with a crank no start problem. I replaced the distributor correctly and as close to original as possible, but am needing to get the timing set more precise to get the van to fire up. Is there a way to set the timing precise enough, while it's not cranking, to then be able to crank the engine properly to set the timing perfectly?

I have power to the distributor but can't get the signal right to send spark out to the plugs..

Do you know how to get the #1 cylinder to it's TDC(top dead center) of it's Compression Stroke?
When you do the mark on the crankshaft pulley will line up with the "split" line of where the two halves of the crankcase mate together.
The rotor should be pointed at the end of the split when the cylinder #1 is at TDC. the end meaning where the horizontal topside of the engine case stops and makes a vertical turn down, i.e. the corner of the engine case.

This would get you close enough for the engine to start ignition wise.
You say there is no spark coming out of the Distributor? Check the Hall Sensor wires that the old brittle plastic connector coming out the side of the Distributor has not cracked and still is one solid piece.

Note that TDC #1 and TDC #3 are easily confused as the crankshaft is in the identical position for both.

It's called static timing and is done all the time o earlier engines. It helps to know what distributor you have. The ignition is on but not running and a test light is used.
