Has anyone ever seen these before?
I didnt believe they were VW, there are no markings on them, they were in a box with a few other early 60's beetle parts I just picked up.
Any Ideas? _________________ 67 Type I in Harley turquoise(1914CC)

If memory serves, they were a '60s accessory for those who wanted to be a little bit different.
If there were any tangible benefits to be touted, they would probably be advertised in Popular Mechanics or an early '60s JC Whitney catalogue.
Hope this helps. |

When you say different, what do you mean, sound? Do they make the car quieter? _________________ '67 Type 1 sedan, 1641cc

I still dont believe they are VW,
Shannon came home and asked me what they were, and I told her they must be an old furnace part.
That are very hefty, not like the tailpipes we used to sell at the parts store. _________________ 67 Type I in Harley turquoise(1914CC)

I started working for VW in 1964. I have never seen anything like that. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Thats kind of what I expected to hear, the guy I got them from was not at all VW savvy.
I just started removing parts from the transaxle I got from him.
The boots had the VW logo on them, first time I noticed them.
I'm finding new stuff here too, like the slinger behind the brake drum? _________________ 67 Type I in Harley turquoise(1914CC)

Hello all,
this thread is a bit old but I didn't want to open a new one. Do you know these tailpipe trims? I have owned them for at least 40 years and they are currently attached to my 70 convertible. I have never seen another pair of them. No one on the German forums could tell me anything about these trims. The trims are made of thick sheet metal, they are chrome plated and the rear end is painted with black paint. The tailpipe trims are attached with one clamping screw each.

Those tailpipe trim covers are nice.
I, personally, don't recognize them or the inserts shown at the start of this post. However, I do agree that they could be an "accessory" item found in catalogs like JC Whitney and others.
I remember in the early 70's, a number of manufacturers produced all kinds of exhaust tip covers or replacement tips themselves, for the dual tipped VWs of the day. If I had to guess, I'd imagine a catalog description of those using terms like, "European Styled" or "Ferrari like". Nevertheless, these options were pretty abundant in catalogs and parts stores - especially for those who may have wanted a different look or sound and didn't want to install a complete (at the time) header exhaust system.
I had (and still have) a pair of chromed flair tipped exhaust pipes without any baffles that replace the "fweem" pipes and sound a lot more like a typical sports car. However, those sit in my part's bin as I prefer the original sound and look. _________________ 1967 Beetle

These were typically used on a Bug muffler when installed in a Bus so the tailpipes clear the bumper. |
