there's a photo of the guy stamping the body numbers but don't recall seeing one of the id plate installation. photos show it fitted before the marriage of body to chassis...I would think before the tank is fitted so there's access to both sides.

If you look the original rivets, you can see the heads are flat on the top. Means there were a large heavy flat iron block as a support against all the heads at the same time, and the opposite sides were hammered, maybe manually. The heavy block might have support to the tray shelf under.

So, what kind of rivet they used? I have seen them in clear silver as on your pic and also black steel ones. I have some 3x6 black steel rivets, but they are so extrem strong, you can‘t hammered them by hand on a new painted car with a 10kg hammer. But they also use no alluminium rivets. So i ask my self, if they use a spezial build vw tool (not a hammer) to bend the rivets. I actualy use alluminium rivets.

surely on an assembly line they would be using a rivet gun, not a hammer...

My heavy block which was easy to get a perfect support on table, you can't do it with a car like this.

Hammered, not needed a very heavy hammer.

The upper rivets are originals, lowers new:

Original opposite side of my April 1951 unrestored car. I will clean it better to see the riveting better.

Rivets have round head, and it flatten when hammering the opposite side when heavy block of iron is located on the heads.
