Take the nut off the ball joint, seat the bottom in the spindle and then replace the top nut on the ball joint.

Did this, worked great. Front is down 3 inner splines with empi lowered linkpin oil shocks. Still have yet to do the rear.

If you lower the Type 3 by suspension alone is it important to use a shorter shock?

It really depends on how low you go. According to Brian Fye, if you go more than 3 splines you need to use short shocks. At 3 splines you can still use stock shocks. But, I've found that going 2 splines (inner or outer) you can use stock shocks without any issues, as it puts most of the travel in the middle of the shock stroke. That's not saying you can't use short shocks at 2 splines, because you can.

I’m going to start by posting here but may post elsewhere. Fair warning.
Anyway I have stopped here for the day…

I have lowered it one inner spline from where it was. However the car had already been messed with before I got it.
But it seems as I’m really going to have to fight the arms to get the joints back in. Any tips? I read a bunch in the last week leading up to this but I’d appreciate any tips while I keep looking.

Sorry. My bad Laughing Seems the type 3 trailing arms and type 1 trailing arms are different in design. From earlier in this thread

Lol no worries! Nothing would surprise me at this point.
Not usually a fan of inheriting someone else's project.
Especially on a car I am totally unfamiliar with!
I have NO idea what should be what!

I still have not had time to mess with it anymore.
I am going to try everything I have read until something works.
Some people say bolt up the lower joint first. Others say top.
Some say remove the top bolt from the ball joints instead of the lower bolts...I don't know.
Guess I'm just going to throw the kitchen sink at it and see what will work....

I think I am going to bolt the upper joint in and then with the floor jack, jack the whole assembly up so i can get the lower ball joint in.
It is really the upper arm that seems to be the trouble maker, at least in my case.
I was watching a video where a guy needed a spring compressor (or something) because he needed to bring the arms closer together, but I actually need the arms further apart!
