Temp sensor for gauge - cover ideas?

Howdy - I have an 86 2WD that has this style of gauge temp sensor on the lower thermostat housing:

I have had several issues with the wiring to it and it seems to get wet easily. Did it ever have any sort of rubber boot on it, and/or has anyone come up with something that works well at protecting it (besides wrapping it in rescue tape)?
