There is a total of four pieces to the Thing skid plates.

The front-most piece (#7) is mounted to the rear transaxle mounts. It makes removing and installing the engine an "extra credit" operation.

The "under engine" pieces (#1 & #2) can be mounted on any Type 1 case.

Mounting the rear piece (#8 ) requires the "universal case" threaded bosses.

The rear piece also supports the "industrial tins" on '73 models.

With full flow oiling, the rear piece is a near impossibility without ridiculous modification.

If you drive your Thing on roads only, there is very little benefit to using these pieces.
