Nice pics Alex!
This thread has been quiet for a while, so I also thought I would brighten it up with some pics from this past weekend.

|

I see that I can get a manual for a 1993 Mexican VW Beetle from Germany at about US$100, but no. It’s a gift for the shop that carefully maintains my ‘71; they have a customer with one and all they have right now are some .pdf files.
What do the Mexican mechanics use?
My only contact there (a shop in La Paz, BCS) told me that there isn’t such a thing and that they just “wing it”. I call BS on that.
There has to be a repair manual for the last of the Mexican aircooled, fuel-injected, modern Beetles, but all my usual sources are not working,
I don’t even care what language it is in, but ideally Spanish or English. |

I am too lazy to go through all 149 pages since your original post (bad me), but years ago you lamented the poor rear view mirror angle. Could a 'vert mirror be adapted to mount there? Earlies swiveled up to solve that problem.

Thanks KT, the mirror visibility problem is specific to the open air. When the roof is open it blocks the inside rear view mirror. I don't think a different angle of the mirror would help.
I can see over the top of the open roof, that is I can see the top half of vehicles following me, I'm blind when I'm backing into a spot. I plan to install a rear view camera, to overcome that.
Not a top priority, although I just ordered a 1 DIN size receiver that has a small video screen. I didn't order for that reason, but I'll play with the video option, it may be enough (so I don't need to install a larger screen). _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)

I posted this in the stupid questions thread but perhaps this would have been the better place. Doesn't mean the question isn't stupid, just that you all might know the answer.
What are the silver valves for on this so-called "sherryberg carburetor for a Mexican Beetle" and what do they connect to? I have a Bocar from what I think is an '83 Mexi-Beetle on my '73 Super, but it doesn't have the two silver valves shown on this one. One is where the plug for the bowl would be and the other is where the idle jet would go on a German 34-3. Thanks!

They are vacuum operated jets that move and modify the fuel/air mixture in the idle (the one used in place of the idle jet) and main circuits. They are part of the altimetric compensation system, basically since Mexico City is at more than 2000m above sea level, non injected mexican 1600 bugs adopted this system in the 80s and 90s up to the introduction of Fuel Injection.
From what I've learnt in the past years, basically you had a pressure-sensing switch, an electric valve and a vacuum reservoir. By distributing vacuum to the jets (edit: and moving them allowing more or less air to pass) in response to a change in altitude the system could lean or enrich the mixture.
edit: you can turn that carb into a "normal" one by replacing the idle jet with a standard one and the other with a plug. _________________ cars:

Garba: Is this the vacuum reservoir that you are referring too?
I think I have a photo somewhere showing the pre-ACD Mexican Beetle engines (that use this). I'm not sure if it clearly shows the hookup, but I'll see if I can dig it up and post it. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)

yes, there used to be a thread with a clear pic of a mexi with a "sistema altimetrico" carb. _________________ cars:

Garba, grazie mille per la tua risposta, adeso capito!
Hopkin - I saw '83 Mexi-Beetle for sale at one of the online auction sites. I think the car had less than 1k miles on it and had the pictures of this intact system. One of the connections to that vacuum cannister was the retard port on the back of the carb, that connected up to a T-fitting, w/one of the Ts running behind the carb I'm guessing to the idle jet valve. I suppose those canisters are completely NLA. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

I think #8 and #12 are reversed in the table with respect to the drawing.
#8 in the table is a length of vacuum hose of 116mm, while in the drawing is pointed at the pressure sensing switch (171919371D) which in the table is #12. _________________ cars:
