Greetings.

My vintage Baja Bug is equipped with a Porsche 356 steering box.

Does anyone know if a new replacement "peg" is available. I'm talking about the piece that rides in the worm gear. My peg has a flat spot on one side from some off-road hammering.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Aren't these pegs the same as what is used in the early VW Bus?

Probably not that much in $ at the moment Wink This peg also fits bus steering boxes up to around 62/63

You would be better off to get a later TRW gear box from a good Parts Supplier.

Hello-

Your just going to buy the peg?! There's a place in Switzerland that sells new internals for your box. http://www.elevenparts.com/viewer.php?id=873&img=pictures/873/elevenp1

I don't dare ask the price. Wink

I just noticed that the steering pegs from these 2 businesses don't look the same in the pictures.

http://www.elevenparts.com/viewer.php?id=873&img=pictures/873/elevenp1

I thought all the 356 boxes were the same inside. What's going on?

Confused

I recently purchased a used VW steering box that I will use in my Baja until I can fix the Porsche one. I need to have the pitman arm on the VW box bored for Ford tie rod ends before I can install it, though.

Hello-

I just opened up the ZF steering box I would like to install in my VW. It's nice and tight, the peg looks good, but there is some galling on the worm gear. I would like to address this issue before I install the box, but I would prefer not to spend $500 (Zim's) to have it rebuilt.

Does anyone know what Zim's actually does when they rebuild the box? Do they replace the peg/worm gear, or do they just machine it?

Does anyone know of a company that rebuilds import steering boxes that isn't as expensive?

Thanks,

Paul

The peg comes in two peices which hold the taper rollers, the first pic is the peg only, the second pic is the peg with the other part pressed on...if you actually take your box apart you will see how it works

Why not take your peg to a welder and have the flat spot built back up and then file it to match the contour, it's not like it spins at 5K and if the worm needs dressing up a small piece of hard wood and some 400 Wet/dry will fix it up.
