Hi to everyone, new member wanting a little advice on converting my variant 412 1972 distributor to an electronic system.
What make would you recommend? Plus the best place to buy it?

How is the engine being fueled? Is it still the facyory injection? If so.....you only have a couple of drop-in options....because the distributor has your fuel injection timing triggers in it as well.

You could install a Pertronix igniter......which is a points replacement module....and works very well. I would also recommend the flamthrower 42kv coil with it as well. Great combo!

The other option is a complete new 123 distributor with both electronic ignition and programmability for the ignition curve.

I have a Pertronix Ignitor with stock Bosch coil in one of my Type4 D-jet engines, it was cheap and i got a really quick start and smooth run and no need to change points and adjust timing again (one should still check timing now and then to see that dizzy advance is working ok).

The disadvantage is that the early Ignitor models (which I have) like to burn if you happen to leave the ignition on for a longer time, this is, from what I understand, not the case for the later Ignitor models.

I totally agree! The ignitor...the basic system...if all else is in good shape (your mechanical advance and the vacuum advance)....and its D-jet with the high compression.....just getting rid of the points and going to a basic pertronix makes a noticeable difference in running and starting.

Its noticeable.

It does this with D-jet...because the small bit of dwell variation you get from points as their wear and carbonize....changes the combustion slightly and that changes the vacuum signature slightly...which changes your fueling slightly because its MAP controlled...and thats just enough to cause the engine to run less efficiently.

One would likely never notice this on a carbed system because its fuel mixture not MAP controlled...and its less noticeable on the 1974 with L-jet because the metering is not as sensitive.

The stock coil is fine....but the pertronix coil is also a noticeable improvement. The stock system barely has enough voltage for the higher compression engines. Ray
