It's good to have the encouragement from you all!!!
This was especially gentle and generous from our Hawaiian brother....

I agree MacJelly! I've chosen to think about it as a big overstuffed easy chair.
Today I polished the pop-out, slipped in a fresh rubber and BANG!!!
(That's a soldering iron melting holes in the headliner for the popouts.)

Fifty bucks for a 20ft roll of automotive carpet and padding at Menards with an in-store rebate. Charcoal. Here's what I've got in so far. There are no wrinkles or bubbles, any shapes are the underlying structure. The edges are clean even without binding. This automotive carpet is flexible and does not unravel where cut. It cuts with a utility knife on the straight edge and easily with carpet scissors on the curves. The camera exaggerates the meeting of the pie cuts, they blend nicely in person. I am really pleased with this.

Looks great! Hey Buggeee, you don't happen to have some extra scrap pieces of headliner left over? I need to cover the area just below the rear window. My factory carpet only goes as high as your new carpet does - leaving that horizontal strip covered by headliner. The rest of my headliner us good, I just need enough to make that horizontal strip between carpet and rear window. _________________ '91 Vanagon Westfalia

Hey Tom thank you! If I did it would be yours but this multiple piece kit was pre-cut around the rear window so there were some scraps but nothing that would cover that area for you, or even close. _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

Buggee, I'm sure you posted it earlier, but where did you get the multi-piece headliner? _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Preparing for the carpet and padding installation on the floors.
Fabricated some block-off plates for the foot warmers. I'm just going to use the heat outtlets from under the rear seat, and the two defrost tubes out the corners of the window up front. I want to maximize the pressure out the defrost corners because I've deleted everything else from the dash.
Ran the nervous system for the under seat hidden stereo system. Slathered all the wires in contact cement, slathered the corners along the floor, etc. and pressed it all in place once it set up. Very messy! This should hold the wires where I need them tucked away while the carpet gets glued in.

Buggee, I find the foot heater vents pretty useful. And thats in NoVA, not the tundras of Ohio. Although Ohio winters aren't quite what they were my last time there in '87..... _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Awesome job! Like the heat block off plates and may do something similar. I'm going with heated seats and maybe a small diesel heater up front. |

V - Ask and you shall receive.
Having lounged the entire summer cruising around in the Krankenwagen Tribute, the winter work begins in earnest.
Now... where was I? Oh, yes. Fenders.
Retrieved from the attic, having been metal-worked in a previous lifetime of mine, the fenders ran the gauntlet of lipstick preparation.
Preamble. Quick coat of epoxy primer to the underside.
1. Filling... and sanding... and blow every inch with compressed air.
2. One light coat of etch primer on the bare metal followed by three heavy coats of high build primer over all and... and sanding... and blow every inch with compressed air.
3. Primer sealer befor color and... wait, identify all the little defects. Dang.
3.a.. Get the glaze and hit those... and sanding... and blow every inch with compressed air... and seal it all all again and.... it's time for color! Wait, what the f#&k. How did I miss that little ding? "Dont be afraid to stop the build" Fix that.
3.b. Seal that spot.
4. Set up the paint booth (As the kids say "Yea Boi!")
5. Knock out two coats of base and three coats of clear, consecutively, flashing between coats as I prep the gun for the next pass. These pics are straight from the gun. Hasn't been cut or buffed here. The wet floor keeps dust down and stops the overspray from sticking to the floor, somewhat. This result right here is definitely the high point of my lifetime build experience so far. Can you find the bunny?

I, like everyone else have been waiting patiently for this post! There's nothing like, "Eye Candy". Most satisfying.
I studied every pic, looking for that Damn bunny. I should have known you would save it for last.
Beautiful work. Cant' wait for more. |
