The last time I tried to get the TC on it the shaft pulled out about three inches when I took the TC off.

Dimensions for that pump shaft protruding are in the Bentley, which I don't have in front of me, but are also within the pages of thesamba, I think even in my Gallery........ but I've yet to locate the drawing,

It should be close to flush with the stationary shaft, and the pump shaft should protrude 21mm past it. I just don't know what I need to do to get it seated. I really don't want to take the transmission out and stand it on end, which is the suggestion from Bentley.

Got it seated. Used a 15mm deep socket, twist and tap with a rubber mallet. After about 10 minutes it snapped back in place.

Snapped back in place?

Or cracked out the mating part of the oil pump?

It should simply nestle into the drive plate at the pump.

Lets hope it is back in place........

"Snapped," was probably not the right term. I was lightly tapping it when it slipped back into place. It felts as I would expect it would, having rebuilt a bunch of engines and done just about everything else on air-cooled, manual transmission VWs.

Well, I like your new term much better.
Slipped into place is far better, though hammering on precise fit parts is always iffy.

Give it a go!
See what happens.

Wire the TQ in place and leave it wired until almost the final bell housing draw in place, cut the wire and withdraw it.
Then final tighten.

Well, I don't think it ended well. I now have a whine in the transmission when not under load. The AT fluid level is also still full, although I lost a fair amount of fluid when the TC came off with the engine. I'll be dropping the transmission this weekend and digging into it. I'm hoping one of the many parts just fell out of place, but I'm guessing it won't be that simple.

Any suggestions on where to start would be appreciated. My plan is to drop the transmission, separate the transmission from the final drive, and take the transmission apart.

Look at the top of Vanagon in the very first post Vanagon Essentials FAQ ......

There are links to several auto trans rebuild threads.
