Theme
Anyone else love the DNA that runs through the Split Beetle, Barndoor, early Coachbuilts and Pre-A dashes?
It’s all about the pods, isn’t it?

I thought this could be a Picture Thread for the 1950-55 Pre-A dashes.

Art Deco
The Porsche Pre-A dash in particular has a real Art Deco feel - the overall dash shape, the pod plinth and the glovebox details.
It is more cluttered than the Split Beetle or Barndoor.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Detail
I’m particularly interested in:

1. The little details that help you date the dash & therefore maybe the car*
2. What radios were original fitment back in the day (the Telefunken ID52 seems to be installed most often today)
3. The steering wheels & their original colour (I prefer the second generation wheel, the VDM 2-spoke)

All a learning curve for me, so please chime in!

*Some dashes are not original to the cars

Display
Who can resist looking at a Pre-A dash?

Survivors
Approximately 9400 Pre-As were made
Up to a third are thought to have survived…so around 3000 cars

‘53 Detail
Just about every knob and gauge (except for the Störk oil temp gauge) will be different on the '55 dash vs the late '53 dash. Here's a summary of knobs, gauges and doohickies for the '53 dash:

Bosch headlight switch with stepped knob
3x small pull switches for interior light, wipers and gauge lights
Bosch B-code key ignition switch
Stork oil temp gauge with 2-ended needle (same as '55, though different probe)
Veigel tach and speedo
3x dummy lights, same as '55
push button starter
"S" choke pull, knob similar to hood/trunk release pulls
"H" heater pull, below ashtray, knob similar to hood/trunk release pulls
Autofume cigar lighter, below ashtray
2x waterfall knobs, for ashtray and glovebox (for coupe)
All knobs are ivory

1954 Dash
>Single piece screen
>In-line door handles
>Flat door panel pull handles
>Waterfall ashtray & glovebox handles until Feb 54 tbc…from there on, Lozenger style
>Opposing wipers until April 54…from there on, parallel wipers
>Painted metal doortops
>VDM 2-spoke wheel (from April 54, now Beige or Grey, not Ivory)
>New ‘Porsche-own’ knob style from April 54 (Beige or Grey)
>Ivory push button starter also goes from Ivory to Beige or Grey (April 54)
>Initially 3-gauge dash…no fuel gauge
>June 54, VDM fuel gauge (hooded) added far left…so now twin small dials to left of speedo…’4-gauge dash’
>Grab handle introduced far right, June 54 tbc
>Veigel gauges until June 54…from there on, VDM gauges
>Dual needle oil temp gauge
>From mid-54, oil temp gauge gained a hood (no hood before this)
>Steering column indicator arm (Black)
>Small door pocket
>Longer, cranked gearstick
>”Ashtray double switch” until Jan/Feb 55…then single switch
>Map light above ashtray on Cabriolets
>Mid 54, instrument lights now controlled by twisting the light switch (dimmable)…so separate instrument light switch is dropped
>From May 54, centre pod blanking plate now with two horizontal ribs & a Porsche script

Body clue: Grilled front indicators, short bonnet/hood handle

James Davies wrote:
Wipers
Opposing wipers were used up through through coupe 52029, which was about the end of April 1954. From 52030 onward, wipers were parallel with articulated blades that were supposed to follow the shape of the windshield, even the bend. Sometimes they didn't. This was a cost saving measure so as to not need separate R and L wiper arms/blades. Parallel wipers use the same arms and are not handed.

1955 Dash
Until Sept ‘55

>Single piece screen
>In-line door handles
>Flat door panel pull handles
>Parallel wipers
>Painted metal doortops
>VDM 2-spoke wheel
>Lozenger ashtray & glovebox handles
>New knob style (Porsche own)
>Steering column indicator arm (Black)
>Grab handle far right
>”Ashtray single switch”…a single switch below the ashtray for the autofume cigar lighter
>Heater pull knob (left, under ashtray) relocated to the floor Jan/Feb 55
>VDM fuel gauge far left (4-gauge dash)
>VDM gauges
>Small door pocket
>Longer, cranked gearstick
>Map light above ashtray on Cabriolets

Body clue: Long bonnet/hood handle, grilled front indicators

Radios
Acceptable radios for your Pre-A!

There were numerous similar-looking pod radios available for your Pre-A. The Telefunken ID52 is a popular choice. Radios marked with a * are known to have been installed back in the day. When retro-fitting, some owners like to dovetail the radio with their Pre-A year. Or just go with whichever radio takes your fancy - if you can find it! I think it’s cool to see the lesser-seen radios installed. Which is your favourite? Only a few Pre-As appear to run with a blank centre pod (ie without a radio).

Please chime in if you have a period picture that shows a radio installed, or if you know what radio your Pre-A had back in the day.

RHD Dashes
For RHD dashes, the factory took a LHD dash and cut/swapped the left and right hand wings over. They did this until the introduction of the 356B. As you can see, they have to make various other mods too…labour intensive! Follow the weld lines.

Note the metal glovebox…dropped for 52 on The LHD dash…but thought to live on throughout Pre-A production on the RHD dashes. This is a late ‘54/early ‘55 dash.

Paint
After initial painting in the body colour, it appears the dashes on the lighter colour cars received a darker, complimentary colour dash. This may have been to reduce reflected glare in the windscreen. Some restored cars have lost this cool detail, with the dash incorrectly repainted the body colour.

The dark colour chosen for the dashtop complimented the interior colour…a warm colour for warm colour interiors (ie reds), a cooler colour for cool interiors (ie blues)

If anyone has a picture showing an original paint dash on an original paint car, please post it up!

James Davies wrote:
If…a light-colored car, they often painted the front of the dash a 2nd coat of paint that was darker and complemented the interior color. So a mode grey car would have got a dark blue dash, or an ivory car a maroon dash. But the backs should be body color with some overspray from the front. The primer on the early cars was an iron oxide primer - the color of rust

James Davies wrote:
The standard dash colors in 1954 were:

R501 Black - for black cars
R538 Turkish red - for Turkish red cars
R537 Graphite metallic - for Graphite metallic cars
R542 Dark beige - for Ivory cars
R536 Jade green metallic - for Jade green cars
R543 Dark silver - for Silver metallic cars
R532 Dark grey - for Pearl grey cars

R522 Azure blue - for Azure blue cars
R533 Terracotta - for Terracotta cars

Quote:
Dark Blue - for Mode Grey car
Maroon - for Ivory car
