I used to have one.
It had the same markings as the full length "bearclaw" racks.
I am skeptical as to whether these were ever offered with Westfalia racks...
In that photo you can see that there is an extra brace that holds the ladder...I've seen these on a few Westy racks but I don't believe that they are Westfalia issue.
Has anyone seen an advertisement (period 60ies/70ies) that shows an accessory ladder holder for a Westy rack? |

Question about ladders: Where are they stowed when the bus is being driven? Do they go on the roof rack? or inside the bus? (seems like the would take up a lot of space!). I'm thinking of getting one for my 67 Westy but always had this question. Thanks! |

I've got a rack and ladder made by Tom Conner. His ladders do not fold in the middle but do not rest on the tire (basically near the base of the wheel arch). I never remove my ladder. I have a short bungee cord that goes from the bottom step and down to the fender lip. Been hangin' there for 5 years now. Never moved when driving around. I do remove it if I'm going to a big city so it doesn't grow legs. I just throw it inside while parked in seedy areas;)

J.Pickens;
I have yet to see any documentation (Sales brochure) showing Westfalia ever had a ladder available for their busses or that they had an optional provision for any of their Westfalia racks.

I'm certainly no ladder expert, but the "Westy" ladder's I've seen hanging on the wooden rack slats just "looked wrong" to me. If they were meant to hang from the wood, why weren't the ends bent over to align with the wood, instead of round?
Also, see how that ladder hits the middle of the bulge on the side panel with the rubber feet, and the lower feet line up with the edge of the wheel rims? That height is controlled by the position of the extra ladder support bar.
Looks original to me.
Anybody have any documentation on this? |

Separate and new question...
Has anyone seen this before (picture below)?
I did a few searches on TheSamba, but haven't found anything.
Supposedly rare, fits on corner... aftermarket I'd say...
If anyone knows anything about it, or wants to make guesses, would you say Split bus or Bay?
If split, what type of rear bumper is it/was it designed to work on/with?
Rarity experts? Looking to you... Thanks!

I have never seen or heard of anything like that. I would suspect it is for a firetruck, like and American-LaFrance or something like that. _________________ .

That's the first thing that came to mind for me as well. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Thanks Lind and busdaddy...
The seller (on their ad), claims it's a "rare" rear VW corner VW step ladder that connects to the bumper... and although I can imagine someone once having done that with this, it's origins seem odd, and the practicality and solid-ness (unless you have created your own bumper) seem odd.
I do love the idea of it, however. _________________ ----------------------------------------------------------

Accessory makers of the day were usually pretty proud of their stuff, it'll have a name cast into the bottom, if it's for a fire apparatus it might just have a part number. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
