I am flabbergasted to see "right front beauty ring" on your to-do list.
Why wasn't it replaced within days of its disappearance?
What has become of your priorities?
You have made the car run well enough that it can get out of its own way, but you are letting the important things deteriorate.
I am so disappointed. |
Me too.
And to make matters worse, just lost the right rear one as well.
It’s worse than “ring around the collar”. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

I think Chuck has hit the nail on the head. All those years of me berating people who went the extra mile with their restorations only to get a flat 100 yards from home by leaving off the beauty rings. Their usual excuse, "I've just had the rims powdercoated and didn't want to scratch them"
Dammit once the Beauty Ring is on your Ghia, they look so good NOBODY will want to take them off. Lose one and the car stays in the garage until you get a replacement. _________________ John.

And then there is a bunch of under the hood type stuff to do:
replace fan shroud (inspect oil cooler)
replace generator
replace voltage regulator
replace fuel pump
replace spark plugs
replace spark plug wires
ream preheat tube
install plug wire tube
install thermostat and ring
clean and paint coil
paint manifold
paint pulleys
change oil
repair heater (connections, tubes, flaps)
check Bowden tube bend
change transmission oil
deal with odd chassis support
deal with mismatched exhaust pipes _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Quite right there John, and in this day and age who has but one pair of trousers! The forward thinking would maintain a set of spare rings ready to go on at a moments notice. Hec, have one on the spare wheel to cover the loss should it happen out on the road. Don’t be caught with your trousers down.

Don’t get me started on beauty rings… I’ve put them on, taken them off, lost them, bought them, lost them again, bought them again and lost them… seriously thinking about leaving them off… and yet I find myself looking for deals on eBay and the samba… what the hell? |

The two beauty rings that Alex and I put on have stayed on.
Gonna get the team together for a rematch. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

So it’s rainy and cold — seems like it’s gettin’ on time to prepare to send our car off the Dwayne. Lot’s of little jobs that are going to need ‘splaining. Here’s one:
I want to get him to weld on the missing back straps for the taillights.
Is there a good picture to give to him for what he needs to fabricate?
Also, I think I got the correct taillights to replace what’s there but I don’t understand how they connect. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Remove that hack-job mess before the D'Wayne sees it to avoid total embarassment and humiliation. |

I didn’t know the strip went behind the taillight housing. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Well, I did it.
Went for a short errand ride and left the lights on.
Yep, waiting for a tow.
Adventure!
Oddly, tried to jump it with my son’s car. No difference in cranking speed (near nil).
Probably just need better cables or stronger battery.
In any case, testing out Hagerty’s towing insurance.
I think I will leave the lights off from now on. At least in daylight. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Couldn’t even start it with a power pack.
Something odd seems to be going on. Will charge and see… _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Not wanting to be a bringer of bad tidings but I have had optima batteries and found them to not be what they are cracked up tp be. After a deep cycle caused by a stereo that drew power when turned off, the optima never recovered and had to be replaced. It was less than a year old.
Won't be buying another.
