Wow!!!! Outstanding work, my hat is off to you. Very sharp |
Thanks! Your steering column vid was very useful for me. And at windshield install time I’ll review your vid on that again too. |
Awesome thank you!! I’m glad the films are helping others! _________________ 1968 Type 1

Beautiful build Weezle!
What kind of silicone heat shielding is that? I need some of that for my remote oil filter lines - I’ve had issues with them getting too close to the header. Re-routing helped avoid the issue but that stuff looks great!
Amazing work, again. _________________ 1978 Super Beetle Convertible - 1776cc L-Jet injection |

The dash was covered in leather, I got this kit from ebay.
The dash is reflocked - kit from amazon:

Really enjoying this build. Can you specify the link or search term for the Amazon dash leather kit? I find a lot of patch/repair kits but not something that could do a complete dash. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

ran a sort of auxillary wiring harness from the battery. It goes through a huge breaker first. then a few leads are on a heavy duty relay that is triggered by the "X" terminal on the ignition. one lead is constant on. I used a trailer wire to bring multiple leads up front where they power three new fuse blocks: one under dash switched, one under dash always hot and one in the trunk switched. also a lead for the gilmore ac system. a lead back to the relay to power on the switched fuse blocks and one lead is used to light the dash light marked "fan" so I can see when the cooling fan is activated. The battery is run through a switch from superbeetle solutions. also on the kick panel is a port for an extension cord to power the trickle charger. between the two new fuse blocks is the memphis audio bluetooth stereo system.

May have goofed. I put the steering collumn in because that needs to get attached to the ujoint under the tank - so that I could put the tank in and fire up the beast. But now wonder if I can get the dash board in with the wiper switch there.....? anyone? I do have the ventilation thingy on the dash but thats just two screw I can remove that, and I guess I can take the glove box out of the dash as well as its pretty bulky. Just thought I'd ask before trying to mount the dash in place to avoid cursing

quick updates:
test fit the seat:
specs: pontiac fiero seat covered in TMI smooth and basket weave grey. Seat covers made by fellow in Tampa who specializes in Fiero seats. I sent him the fabric and he did his magic. speaker in headrest and seat heaters since no heat exchangers on my headers. main point of this test....will the doors close? answer =yes. plus the color matches the paint spot on.
got the gas tank in, brakes are bled but used pressure bleeder. pedal still needs to be pumped up to get firm. will do the old fashioned two man bleeding using my neighbors foot soon.
Heres the new harness from VWLOOMS in UK:
once thats in Im gonna fire this beast up. I've never heard it run in person. _________________ I got a fever, and the only prescription is more beetles!

Looks like this is going to be a really nice build! I am anxious to see what you do in regards to the a/c kit-I avoided the Gilmore kit since it took up so much trunk space and the kit looked a bit cobbled together, at least in the pics Gilmore has online. I am sure yours will turn out great so I am looking forward to those images. |

yes you may have noticed I installed the same in dash vents the port or dealerships used to install a/c back in the day. I don't like the "stuck on" appearance of the Gilmore vents under the dash. They are quite brittle unfortunately being 40 year old plastic. Same plastic elephant trunk tubes carry air from the trunk mounted evaporator/fan housing to those ducts. I actually appreciate the trunk mounted fan housing. The fan is quite loud. My friends bus has the fan mounted directly under the dash and its like a turbine in there with all the noise. You can see the compressor already mounted on the engine in the pics, and maybe the condensor under the transmission as well. Theres not alot of options to add a/c to a bug. Being in Orlando, a/c is kind of non-negotiable. _________________ I got a fever, and the only prescription is more beetles!

The build continues, small problems along the way:
1. alternator light never goes off. Battery voltage same weather off or running so alternator is buggered. Plan to swap it out this week.
2. after two wiper switches and two intermittent relays give up on getting this to operate as per spec. the motor itself was professionally rebuilt by a samba member in classifieds. even in OFF position the wipers remain in intermittent mode. will add a switch to kill the motor power when parked and the stalk in off position. not satisfying but over this already.
3. broke new windshield on first install attempt. will try again this weekend. superbeetle windshields apparently down to one source and about twice as expensive as I paid for the first one. I call this a "stupid tax" I have to pay for breaking the first one.
4. waiting for bracket to hold fuel pump on under the tank. its hanging by the hoses now.
5. cooling fan for the oil cooler was DOA, waiting on replacement.
so these are the hold ups, otherwise progressing at a snails pace towards completion.
new estimated completion date is end of January. _________________ I got a fever, and the only prescription is more beetles!
