Well, sad to get a call today from the shop aka a buddy of mine who was going to work on my Ghia. He told me his Moms dementia had gotten worse and she fell 3 times the last 2 weeks forcing him to close shop in order to take care of her. He is a good guy and obviously a good son. Broke my heart when he said all he wanted to do when he was a teen ager was to have his own shop and he was happy to have done it but now was devastated to have to give it up. So now i am looking for a shop to take on the work. I have an idea who i may call on Monday but want to have a few other options here on the East Coast not too far from NJ. I would love to do my own work and learn welding etc but with my 9-5 and my Wife having Huntingtons disease i have little free time as it is. So the search begins..... _________________ July 1959 Mango Standard Bus aka Obus L346 L347 https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=256592&highlight=

I have heard great things about Cookers in Maryland.

Spoke today with Bob Cookers Brother, Gene. Said his Brother never wants to work on a 60 convertible ghia again since he is currently working on one and it is a bitch to work on lol. He told me to send them some photos to see what they may have to deal with. So we shall see.if my Wife wasn't disabled and disnt need round the clock attention I'd buy a welder and see what kind of a mess I could do but that is not in the cards. |
Well that's disappointing. Cookers just fell off my radar. "I don't want to help you, that's too much work" SMDH _________________ The older I get... The faster I was... |

I think he said it kiddingly like that Ghia was so difficult to do why would i want to mess with another again. Totally didnt rule it out at all. Said he and his brother would look at the pictures i sent. I have been following them for awhile on Instagram. They seem to do good work and shoot from the hip. I edited my post to correct that assumption. _________________ July 1959 Mango Standard Bus aka Obus L346 L347 https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=256592&highlight=

Ok they got back to me and i understand their method. I'm looking to go a different direction though so the search for a body shop begins |
obus I have a 72 Ghia coupe that needs resto and I'm looking at Cookers, I live an hour away.
Can you please elaborate on why you're going in a different direction?
It would help me to figure out which way to go with me resto.
Thanks

they do great work as seen on all of their social media. I think he has a long list and doesnt really like to work on Ghias. Also since mine has body work started he would want to strip it and do all his own work which is understandable. Just not the way i want to go and it was quite a bit more than i was willing to spend. 6 digits. And again not a knock on his work at all as i have never seen something come out of that shop that wasnt a piece of art
So for what its worth, i am still looking for a shop to work on it but currently i am down for the count recovering from a mid section hernia surgery _________________ July 1959 Mango Standard Bus aka Obus L346 L347 https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=256592&highlight=

obus Thanks for your quick reply especially with the recovery with the hernia, I had one a few years ago and it was no joke.
It felt like I was cut from front to back clean thru.
Thanks and stay well.

obus that might not be such a bad idea. Get all of the assembly and engine fitment work done, get it running and enjoy. I would go through the brakes, shocks, etc. drive and enjoy until the right shop is found. |

just placed a bulk order for some stuff on KGPR to hopefully jump start the motivation on the Ghia while i am still not able to do much since my hernia surgery. A few warm weather days coming to NJ should help light a fire too. I may wind up just doing a light mechanical resto to get it drivable for Summer until i find a shop willing to do the body work on it |
Good plan. You will either decide it’s worth it to restore or decide it’s not. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Hi all, I will try to be brief. Back in 2002 i was maybe 6 months into a sales job and had moved into my then GF condo. Was paying storage for my old 21 window bus. Came across a flier in a supermarket for a 1960 convertible. Called and went to look at and it was in all primer. I passed on it for $3500 because i had no storage. yeah stupid. Anyway flash fwd and i find this here on TS and it isnt far from me. Went to look at it and hemmed and hawed. Slept on it and made an offer. A week later and Schatze(named by the prior owners) is home. Was an original Florida car that made its way to NJ. Nice woman i bought it from owned from 2003. Her Husband was working on it and got sick and eventually passed. Now she is moving so posted it for sale. Anyway, got it home. Interior looks original and mostly complete. Outside has bondo and passenger front fender is shaky. Floors look good and engine in it looks like a brand new rebuild though i think the original engine is still at her place which i will eventual get. ok so heres the pics-enough of my blabber. Feel free to chime in as i will need all the help in the world

I just realized that i wrote this before i got all of the info and literature from the woman and never edited it. It was actually purchased in Johnstown PA at Chris Motor Corp and eventually found its way down to Florida. I am still searching for any info. literature, etc from Chris Motor Corp or any of the Florida dealers it was serviced at. Check my ads. _________________ July 1959 Mango Standard Bus aka Obus L346 L347 https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=256592&highlight=
