I have a 58 split case beetle transmission that I’m taking apart for the learning experience. I also have the Bug ME Video that covers the transmission replacement. The axle tubes are removed and I'm now trying to remove the axle by taking off the differential slide gear lock ring (C-clip). However, there is no C-clip or plastic cover. I can only assume that earlier cases had to be split to remove the axles. Is that correct and if so, in what year were you able to remove the axles without splitting the case?
Thanks |

Split the case.
My 54 Build thread has a transmission tear down starting on page 37, half way down the page.

VW_Jimbo,
Thank you - this is very helpful. The transmission I'm working with is A1647344 (April 5. Do you know when they started using the plastic cover and the ability to remove the axles with splitting the case?
Thanks |

You no longer had to split the case when the stopped making the split case for the '61 model year for the bug. 1961 model year for the bus. This is referred to as the tunnel transmission. _________________ Chris

Fun FACTY!
Porsche used the VW split case differential and axles all the way through the 356 production. Diff and axles are all assembled and go in one side of the 741 trans.
Don't axe me how I know. Slightly different hardening process on the Porsche parts, but same parts if you ever are in a situation where it matters.
Cool that you can remove the axles and differential from a 356 w/o removing the trans. _________________
