Does an early 1949 Beetle use a shift rod bushing like later Type 1s? Thanks.

Do you mean the bushing in the nose cone? No, pre Sept. 1952 don't have it.

But it can be made:

No, I'm referring to the bushing that goes in the rod guide, inside the tunnel, just behind the shifter. The metal guide seems fair close in tolerance to the diameter of the shift rod like it may function without the bushing found on later bugs.

Yes, this is how it works - there is a spring there to keep it tight.

(Someone correct me if they did not use these on '49s)

Any suggestion on what kind of lube or grease for the shifter rod?

Hi Mika. I have a 1950 bus gearbox to rebuild...It has no bushes in the nose cone. Do you fit two bushes, the same as later ones or one long one. I am thinking a bush with a 1mm wall thickness would be ok? If can give me any advise I would appreciate it. Regards Simon
