Back of dash…
Radio mounting same as split VW.
Incorrect “bullet” connection for cigar lighter. Hack job wiring for radio amplifier done in the 1980s; radio still works. Note the “notch” to clear windshield divider on upper dash sheet metal.
The dash is mounted in a January 1953 coupe…..very incorrect.

Thanks Al; exactly the type of post I’d like to see on here. I’m a non-Porsche owner (I do have a Barndoor, and a couple of Lowlight Ghias)…just a long term admirer of the Pre-As, with very little related knowledge. So the details you mention are all interesting to me.
What radio is that? It’s one of the bulky ones. Interested to know about the clearance with the wiper motor etc. I see some radio faceplates are notched, which I’ll be adding to the Radio section on p1. Also interesting to see the dash furniture bracket design compared to a VW.
So the notch means the dash is from a pre April 52 car, right…
Are you still doing your 4-digit car?
I have a few more dash examples to post up - and I intend to add a few notes for each one - but (anyone) please fell feel free to post up your photos or comments. I’m not worried about the structure and uniformity of the thread being upset.
I’d really like to see some more period pictures showing a radio installed in a Pre-A. _________________ -StockRocks- |

Same dash…now with the Ivory wheel
Telefunken ID52 radio

Since this is mine, I'll chime in about it. It's a '55 Continental and I am sorting through the "incorrect" bits and trying to get period or year-specific components. The radio is the older style ID52 and I am on the hunt for either a Blaupunkt or Telefunken with the horizontal row of push buttons for 54/55. The steering wheel with full horn ring is a 420mm and greyish hue. I finally found a very nice 400mm and had Koch's refinish it (but the spokes are the original brushed finish), along with painting the 1/3 horn ring in ivory that matches all the knobs and escutcheons. The steering column should be black but it does have a red-tip turn signal stalk that works. In the photo below that shows a different angle of the dash, you can see the improper ignition switch. I got lucky and found a proper NOS switch for late '54/early '55 in Poland. It's a proper "C" code key (two keys, both stamped with the key code.) Those with a really keen eye will note the opposing wipers are not correct for my April '55 car. Not sure why they are not parallel, as they should be, since this was done during its restoration (apparently) in 1987.
BTW, this is a very interesting topic that notes little changes to dashes (switches, gauges, etc.) throughout the Pre-A years. With the exception of the radio that's a few years older than the car and the steering column needing to be painted black, I think I've made some decent progress on getting it proper.
When I got the car:
As it is now: The second photo in the quote above (note: the NOS ignition switch is shown in both of the quote pics) _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")
