This thread probably has the most information about this stuff:

Would be tough to pin down the month based on the Fabrik-Nr. as I've seen them throw older kits in newer buses (probably because they built them ahead of time). Xavi had an SO42 registry up for a while but its not really updated.
That 12770 tag is pretty late, probably close to the end of production. Post a pic of that tag as that's one of the latest I've seen.
From the thread mentioned above:
Based on those you could probably say SO-42 production was roughly (figures edited based on additional detail from Clara):
1965: Fabrik Nr. 1-2200 (about 2200 produced)
1966: Fabrik Nr. 2200-6900 (about 4700 produced)
1967: Fabrik Nr. 6900-12700 (about 5800 produced)
SO-42 total production of around 12,700. |
Man, took me long enough to post a photo of this very late 1967 Westfalia production fabrik brass tag currently hanging above my basement workbench!
I just posted up a "want to buy or trade" ad in the classifieds to try to locate a 9000-ish ID plate for my Jan 1967 Campmobile. I've got four Westy fabrik plates to trade with...

Here is a late 67 So-42: the font for the fabrik # is larger:
On early bay westys, I think they continued the number used on SO-42s:
Here is a tag from a 68 westy buildt in 1967:

Awesome, does that make my '65 the second oldest SO42? _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

^^ would like to see some pictures of your early SO42. Do you feel comfortable posting any of the Mcode info? Mine rolled off the line on January 19, 1965 and has a UH port code of Houston |

My April 1967 tag. I believe it reads 10789. I'll have to double check in the near future. Sorry it's not a closeup.

Have you considered simply starting with a nicer bus? I don't know what your skills are, but the race is easier if you can see the finish line. If you are not a runner, don't start off doing a marathon. |

Would be interesting to see if it has the same early features:
-Jump seat with slanted front
-Metal push buttons on handles
-Early/different curtain pattern (my favorite)
Did I miss anything? _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

Only thing I can think of that you missed is the oddball early clamshell lights. Unfortunately my early curtains were gone by the time I got the bus ( I believe these cutains were featured on first 665 SO42's that rolled off the line. I believe there is a very original and early SO42 (out of Michigan if mem serves) that has the original curtains. Would be great to get get a repro of that fabric made.
Here is an example of the early clamshell on the left with the oddball cutout to reach the light switch behind the lens

I'll put together a new thread on my newly aquired Jan '65 so42 later this week. I'll include all the details and the story how I got it. It's very original and very complete.
It does have the oddball early clam shell lights
