I have found it to be completely unnecessary when you have proper air filters and a good fuel filter. Three years of running now and not once have I needed to clean any jets. Fix the problem at the source.

60 eurobucks a pair is pretty expensive for convenience Shocked

Could be nice in a kit car setting where they are hard to get to. Better yet would be to run a 40IDF 78/79 or 83 Weber with top-access idles, or a pair of dellortos. But that's more money too Very Happy

"Jet Doctors" seem to solve the problem and probably less expensive...

https://www.cbperformance.com/product-p/7557.htm

Dirty idle jets are from crappy sealed air cleaners....

In all my VW , weber years I never knew they made them with the idle jets on top. Embarassed

I wonder why they didn't make them all like that, it's IMO it's the only down side to the IDFs.

You got a pic ????

IDF idle jets are on the side (diaphragm). Not on top. The air corrector, emulsion tube, and main jet along with the "holder" is on top.

In general to keep your carbs clean, besides a good set of air filters, running your engine dry of fuel if the car if it is not going to be used for more then a few days. Actually like myself, some guys on this forum do it all the time..

I know that is a problem for guys with mechanical pumps, unless you use a hand turn-off valve on a fuel line.

I agree with you 100% that the CHI-DFs should've copied this idle circuit.
It would be a game changer.

I wonder if its possible to modify a standard IDF to this configuration??

[quote="Lingwendil"] this is the setup all the chinese factories should be copying.

Maybe the Chinese factories didn't know these IDF's setup were available to copy from. Someone needs to send Empi a request. Wink

Along with good, clean filters-I've found that smearing some grease on the base of the air cleaner element before you place it on to the base helps prevent clogged idle jets.

They copied the wrong 40 DRLA too.
One set for sale in Croatia currently, on ebay, but too clean looking for my taste.
I prefer when they are covered in grime straight from the junkyard, cables and hoses cut and hanging off.
You know they are UNTOUCHED Wink

Yeah, the filthy, greasy ones with stubs of hoses still on are always the most well preserved in my experience, for most parts Very Happy

I run them on my IDFs. Makes changing the idle jet much easier in a Beetle. The jet holder stays snuggly on the allen wrench making it easy to locate, remove and install. I use a shortened allen wrench (~2" long) for even more clearance. No more fumbling 'blind' with a screw driver on the back jets or searching for dropped jet holders in the engine compartment. Done that too many times. Wink

The IDF's with top Idle jets were made for Fiat's, I don't remember what model but it was almost impossible to access the Idle jets in the normal configuration.
I have a set on the shelf as well that I am going to convert the linkage on to mount on a Honda Goldwing.
