I "think" there is only one Torx standard.

I work on some expensive carbon fiber bicycles and they use the standard Txx bits while all the other hardware is metric.

It was my understand that Torx is arbitrary, adhering to neither standard...

Do you mean hex/allen keys? Some people treat them the same but they are different.

Torx is the unit. They are proprietary and neither SAE or Metric.

When Camcar invented this fastener drive system they marketed it as: TORX
The patent has since expired and the correct ISO generic name is: Hexalobular

(sorry - couldn't resist Very Happy)

FWIW...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torx
Quote:
The same series of Torx drivers is used to drive SAE, metric and other thread system fasteners, reducing the number of bit sizes required.

Thank You everyone for taking the time to respond. I was originally concerned that I might mess up the fastener using the incorrect Torx.

Thanks Again,
Rick

Just what fastener are you messing with?, there are no Torx headed ones on a VW from the factory.

Ift he Torx bit doesn't fit right, it's allen key.
Torx on the other hand are very handy for getting a bolt out with ruined allen key slot.
Just hammer a slightly too big torx bit down in the allen key slot. This have saved me lot's of times at work, but also broken lot's of bits. Smile

Hexalobular; say that three times really fast and you'll probably get slapped if you're in mixed company. I do not however think the snap-on guy has any idea what Hexalobular is. He does however understand torx.

Wink There, and IRS CV joint bolts are an M8 triple square as well. Lots of folks mistake them for allens or torx.
