1979 convertible, engine rebuilt 2 years ago and just 1500 miles on it since rebuilt and now I got oil coming out of the exhaust. Had to take it back once already due to over heating. Am I screwed and have to have the engine rebuilt again? |

Confirmed oil?, or black liquid that looks like oil? If it was oil it would be accompanied by smoke, and lots of it.
Catch some of the drops on a sheet of paper or cardboard, if they continue to grow in size with a clearish ring around them after a day it's oil, if they dry up into a stable black spot it's water condensation which is very normal this time of year. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I'd do a leak down and compression test, before taking it back to the builder.
You should not have oil coming out of the exhaust. Something is suspect.
The leak down test will give you an idea of where to look for the issue.
EDIT: Do the Busdaddy check first. If it turns out to be oil. Follow the above recommendations. _________________ I have learned over the years.

yeah are you sure it's really oil and not just water (which is a normal combustion byproduct) with soot in it? Not uncommon on a cold engine with the choke engaged.
I just can't imagine how one could possibly have liquid oil coming out of the exhaust. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

I had a low mileage original 1600 DP engine that dripped oil from one exhaust port where it met the heater box, a drop of motor oil several times per minute just on one cylinder while running. (Obviously the exhaust gaskets are not water tight!) On teardown all tolerances were within spec, valves and guides were tight, hone marks still vivid, no ridge, out of round was zero, and ring gap was .024" verifying it was low mileage. The factory chrome rings had lost their seal. Honing the jugs, soda blasting the pistons and putting in new soft cast rings corrected the problem.
Sometimes I wonder if just soda blasting the pistons would have fixed it, as if the rings were not sealing to the ring grooves due to carbon buildup. The rings were free, not stuck, but it had normal carbon in the grooves. Side play in the grooves was within spec. _________________ '66 Deluxe Bus

Could be all sorts of reasons why smoke or goop comes out the exhaust, and I'm not speculating one way or the other, but people will speculate.
The telltale sign of using oil.... is that you have to add oil.
If the thing is using a full quart between changes then IMO it is in need of repair.
Keep it simple.
But why?... you could have...say, a loose valve guide.
Sometimes you an identify that just looking at it. It could be just a top end problem, or it could be a lot of other things too. |
