I like them. They are thicker than the alternative, they are finished meaning you don’t have to essentially finish welding them up in the corners, they fit well and the stampings are good except the rear section is more like 72-74 than earlier style with the three pressings in the corner near the tunnel. I’m not sure why they did that…

Been working almost full time on this beast and think I’m making great process until I look at the body…
Anyway, I finished getting the pan ready for assembly. Yesterday I sprayed two quarts of 3M Body Schutz, which is what Karmann used, on the underside to protect the paint and maybe reduce road noise. I also painted the beam with two part urethane and bolted it up.
At the shop I’ve been trying to unugly the beat up and rusty right rear fender and quarter panel. At the house I’ve been having more fun cleaning up and painting little stuff like some of the rare accessories ordered with the car, like the locking steering column and the VDO dash fan with remote switch.
The car was a rusty turd, but very original, down to the metal fresh air screens.
I also have all the bits back from the machine shop for the S spec 356 engine I’m building for the car.

Do you have any advice, tricks that help on shooting 3M rocker schutz with the little gun tip. I used it on my ghia and it worked well. Tried using it again (damn the price shot up on that stuff $43 for my last qt)
last week and had issues at about 50 psi. I have another Qt arriving tomorrow.
Great progress on your project!!

You talking about the schutz gun? Maybe it’s clogged? I had that problem once, had some old gunk stuck in it. I usually shoot some thinner through it before I use the schutz. And yeah the pressure was WAY up, 110 PSI as I didn’t run a regulator. It’s not advised though.

Gun is clean. Looks like my issue was due to following their directions, trying to keep psi under 60. I'll bump it up on the next/last bottle. Thanks Dan.

Heap big progress made today. Finished up with the rough bodywork and shot two heavy coats of polyprimer. I’ll let it set up over the weekend and then start blocking..

Good to hear it worked.
No block parties for me, I like blocking. I listen to music and and get into the zone, it’s very Zen.

Finally started building the engine for the 1962 sunroof ghia. Its a 1962 Porsche industrial engine I found a while back but I’m building it up as 356 S spec running a S camshaft, steel lifters, 86mm pistons and cylinders, S/C spec Zenith carburetors and a NOS 022 912 distributor. Should put out over 85hp double the stock turdy 40hp.
Meanwhile at the shop I finished my first pass at blocking and went ahead and polyprimed it again today. Hopefully I’ll get by with one more pass of blocking and can shoot some paint if the weather ever warms up.

That long block looks really good, one of things I like about the Porsche block is the separate cover for the timing gears and oil pump.
Have you done any special headwork?
I see the cable drive tacho output, what tacho are you going to use in the car?

The body is coming along really well too, an exciting moment when you put some colour in the gun. Are you using single stage or 2 pack?

Hi Ian, I am using normal/S B heads. New valves, guides and springs but no porting etc. I’m building it as close to stock as possible.
The oil pump cover is a typical 356 one allowing for the drive gear which came with the engine. I could buy a 912 style shaft and run a flat plate but this leaves me the option down the road to use a 356 style tach adapted to a Ghia. At this point though I’ll probably buy an electric ISP one.
I’m using TCP Restoration Shop single stage Pearl White the cars original color.

I had a 66 Pearl White beetle, love that color. Enjoying this thread and your excellent work.

Hey!

You have a stock 36hp. 36hp is my favorite engine, but 62s came with my least favorite, which is 40hp.
