Just got an oval that was made Dec 1955

The back seat is completely missing!

I see from other posts that the seat bottom from 56-63 will fit.
But the seat back is a little more of a mystery.

It seems to not have the two bolts on each end of the seat like on 67+
Did that also change between 63/64?

Thanks for any insights.

Tom

The change from two to one bolt per side took plane in August 1955, so any rear seat back between 1956 and 1964 model years (and probably later) will drop right in. The cardboard back and steel rails were replaced by carpet at some point.

I had a later 55 that I was able to install a 73 Super Beetle rear seat into. Got the seat from Pick A Part, out of the 73. Took a gamble at $5! But it worked out great!

Yup - 8/55 was a '56 and almost any back seat will work for you - although the early '55 rear seats were a different design - consider yourself fortunate that you were not missing that one - is mucho Yankee-dollars- if you even found one -z

Pulled the driver's side panel in the backseat and found the bolt holt.

My Dad hadn't punched a hole in the new cover for the cardboard.

Thanks!

What year seat back is this?

It fit in the 56 just fine.

Notice the lower edges that curve down more than my 67

So anyone out there been able to fit a later seat back into an early '55? Any modifications that will make a later seat back work in an early '55?
Mika (Vertanen) makes the lower tabs that fit on the bottom of the early seat backs but I've not seen anything on Samba about making a later seat back work on an early '55

We have tried and tried, and no later seat back will work if the original seat back was the early mounting-design - poor planning by VW - on one of our 2/1955s, with early mount-design, we made a wood platform, covering the back seat area - it works well, in our now 2 seater type one.

The last 2, 1954s, we bought, have the correct ( early) rear seat backs - one of 'em, i'll re-use and re-use - i'll never sell it - have fun - z

That's kinda what I was afraid of. I've made two seaters out of a couple of later bugs so that's the direction I've been heading for the 'Ol 55.
Thanks for the info Zen...Experience is the best teacher and having you and others willing to share your wealth of experience keeps some of us less experienced folks plugging along!

Anyone know the hardware size of bolts/ fasteners that hold up back seats of 1955…anything special about them?
Thanks a lot.

Two 6mm bolts each side with fender washers is for the backrest. No hardware used on the seat bottom but it does have support feet left and right that rest/lock behind the inner quarter panel tab, and one foot in the center.
