I just got back to surfing after a 25 year hiatus and bought a foam top long board 8'. I was successful but only 1/3 to 1/5 of the waves caught.

I spoke with a technician at Ron Jon's in Ship Bottom, NJ and he said I would catch more waves with a 10' foam top.

Is this the only 10' soft top? I saw this at Ron Jon's yesterday.
https://keepersportsstore.com/products/cbc-10ft-cal-bear-series-surfboard

I'm not ready for a fiberglass board again but maybe I should go for an epoxy 10' now or should I continue with the foam top?

Thanks VW_Jimbo, your search skills are amazing as I never found another 10' soft top without knowing the brand I received from Ron Jon's. I'm going to follow through. I emailed them for the size/volume.
Excellent chart: https://www.surfnation.com.au/pages/how-to-choose-the-right-surfboard

Haha Abscate, oddly for New Jersey we have a fair amount of good surf spots.
https://www.northeastsurfing.com/spots/surf-spots/new-jersey/
BTW I have a neighbor who surfs 12 months a year here in New Jersey. That will never be me. I have other outdoor sports I prefer in the winter months and even with my wetsuit I'll never be warm enough.

I had a great time yesterday in Sea Bright which is so low at the bottom of surf locations I don't even see it on the surf list. But it's all about having fun catching as many waves as possible and I did just that. I had forgotten how much fun it is and how being out there is like being on another planet just 7 miles from my home.

I had a boss from Glenrock who put me onto the NJ surfing scene about 20 years ago, since then he moved to point Judith.

I’m spending 1/2 time at port Jeff in Suffolk. No surf, but great sailing if you ever want to try that version of surfing.

Hello there ...

I grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas. My uncle let me use his 9' 6" Surfboards Hawaii in 1976. It was glassed in '62 & was so wide I had to grab it by the nose & drag it into the Gulf at 8yrs old. After mowing quite a few yards I bought a 5' 11" twin fin. That served me until I went in the Army in '88.
Fast forward to 2013 & I moved to just outside San Antonio, Tx.

I bought a board off Craigslist, fixed the dings, & made the 2.5hr drive to Corpus.
I was PSYCHED to get back in the saltwater.
Now, in my mind I thought I was still 15yrs old & could stay in the line-up for hours like I used to. WRONG ... !
Although I now practice safe sun I had the worst case of noodle arms -
I couldn't even put the 8 quarters in the car rinse.

I have been going back regularly & now have amassed a quiver of 8 boards. They range from a 5' 8" Dwart to a 7' 6" Planet Blue.

Most of them are in the 6foot range but have wide noses & are pretty thick. I found I need the paddle help. Also I got them at the end of season on clearance ... NSP brand from www.surftech.com . They have sales but you gotta get em kwik to ensure your size is available. My (new) boards were in the $399 to $475 range.
The wife & I leave at 4:30am, get there by 7am, & set up the canopy. I go out for 2hrs, we look for shells, walk out on the jetties, & I get another session. We head back about 1pm after a lunch.

Just an FYI... this is how I unwind or recharge my batteries as I don't run or ride a bike, etc.

Glad some of you indulge in an activity I hold dear cuz it has given me fond memories & is quite the workout.

Stay safe ... jinx

PS ... i have a "fin box" that has fins, wax, Solarez, leashes, etc.
I regularly help a fellow surfer to get / stay in the water.

That's all for now, gotta get back in the water. Aloha. PS - dont come over here.
I wonder why he said that.
THE SURF PUNKS ...letter from Hawaii

FYI ...

Please be VERY cautious about a new soft top board for $75.

4mos ago my wife & ordered a folding matteress thingy for $39. Waited & waited ... nothing. Tried to research site & it was unreachable.
Luckily we were able to get that back but only by disputing the charge thru our bank. Their fraud dept has been top-notch.

Even the Oddysea (sp?) soft tops are like $175 to $300 which is very reasonable.
They're the ones Jamie O'Brian charges at Pipeline. That dude is nutz.

Stay safe & get wet when you can.

I really need to get back into Mother Ocean's surge!

Like above, my uncle gave me some boards when I was around 12. At least one he rode over the lip and speared it into the bottom in Santa Monica. The tip snapped clean off, and I saw that repairs were possible. It was about 9'

I graduated to several smaller shortboards, generally from 5'10" to 6'6", especially as I bulked up the muscles/weight back then.

THEN, I got hired by the Navy and worked at Point Mugu. 60 degree water, submarine canyon 100 yards off shore, open water to the southern swells. Bonsai pipeline, but over a sand bottom, and restricted access. There were days when it was 10-12' perfect left barrels! I normally quite at 6' because of the sheer volume of water moving.

Then I move on in my career, discovered just how much more fun a "fun board" in the 9' range was. Sadly, the last time I was in the water was about 3 years ago. We "paddled out" to memorialize my mother's passing. We didn't actually ride any waves at that point.

I work literally 2 blocks from the beach, but have not gotten back in the water. Maybe I'll come back here soon and thank OP for lighting the fire!

Don’t put it off. There comes a time when you can no longer charge the waves. Make the time now!

Rent a 9 footer first and try that. 10 feet of board is a lot of board. Timing, paddle strength AND speed, trim, waves breaking outside and not beach break, reading the waves better and going out on a spilling wave day instead of a plunging day will improve your wave count.

Yes skoshi surf, thanks I checked out their boards in September and now that I know it's woman owned I might pay more and buy from Melissa.

oc92, I see Melissa of Lucky Dog has rentals on her link I'll followup in the spring with her. She has a nice 10' in her shop as well as some 9'. Do you think that 1 foot would be a hassle for me?

Thanks, obus, I was there in July, awesome OG paint double door camper bus. Max has a nice collection of vintage long boards I'm working toward. Only if I improve with my soft tops. I love that location too, Long Beach Blvd, Ship Bottom, NJ.

LAGrunthaner- is 1 foot a big difference on a surfboard? yes it will handle different and be harder for you to transport... if you are shorter in height it will def make a difference. It will also depend on the kind of waves you are riding. Rent or borrow first but I didn't like going from an 8 to a 9 at all. 10 no way.

9 foot is a lot of board for a soft top especially for a woman, anything bigger gets heavy and cumbersome. try a nine footer from melissa and see how it feels.
