The clunking from the rear started suddenly a couple weeks ago. Cutting to the chase; I replaced all rear wheel bearings and installed new CV's both sides. Had to do this anyway as they had never been serviced. The clunking persists.
Put the car level on jack stands and found the following; No clunk in reverse. just perceptible clunk in 1st, worse in 2nd, markedly worse in 3rd and horrible in 4th. Sound appears to be coming from passenger side. When that wheel rotation is stopped while in gear the clunk disappears. If I stop the driver side wheel rotation the cluck persists.
Another observation, I notice the engine mount on the passenger side is shot and the engine is listing that way about a half inch. A possible source of noise?
Thought I would query the knowledge base here before ripping out the tranny. Any ideas appreciated. |

Only the engine needs to be removed to replace the rear transmission mounts. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. The bad transmission mounts will end up causing other damage unless you fix them. That torque travels somewhere when the motor is able to twist like that. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Check the front tranny mount, too, while the engine is out.
It can be replaced, with some trouble, with the tranny still installed. |

I had an irritating clunk, and, after replacing both cv axels,it turned out to be the shock sliding in the lower shock mount. Added spacer/bushings and no more clunk.
And yeah, check that others stuff too. _________________ 74 1303 (RevBug): plan for German Look
