Just wondering if a later year top (with a glass rear window) can be used on a '66 vert, keeping the same hardware, etc. Planning on converting to a 12v, so setting up rear defroster would also be involved. Just starting planning for my resto and am OK with the plastic,, but would like to know of other options. Thanks to all.

Rear Defroster.....

Hopefully you have a glass window with a working defroster. As far as I have found you can get a replacement window ($$$) but without the defroster. My defroster has been worn out due to PO cleaning the window(?) so many time the conductivity (or connectivity on the glass from side to side) no longer works. (Element is attached to the inside of the window, NOT between the layers of glass)

I've been trying to find replacement solutions but have yet to find one that foes the job Crying or Very sad

Windshield frame is different. I’d stick with the plastic window.

The rear edge of the passenger compartment where the top attaches also has additional sheetmetal structure needed to mount the hinged rear glass. The later glass-window tops are also fastened to the body differently along the back edge.

As Braukuche said, best to just leave it as it is.

And if you're planning on getting a new canvas top, be sure to get one with a stitched-in plastic window. Some tops have the window heat-seamed in place, and that seam will eventually fail from being folded repeatedly when the top is lowered.
