I have the original stock European Hella headlamps on my 72 standard 1200 bug and I know they were not designed for halogen h4 bulbs, they have that cap that is in the centr of the reflector unit that gets in the way of many halogen bulbs at the end and I wonder if it would cause a big problem if I cut that out?
Aftermarket units don't seem to have this thing in the centre. |

You need a P45T base bulb, they exist, although now there are LED ones too.
Don't remove that shield in the housing, you'll blind oncoming traffic, even on low beam. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

It’s ok to remove that shield. That shield was designed for the old style bulbs which were not shielded internally. The H4 have the black tip for internal shielding. _________________ 1971 1302LS Convertible (RHD) owned since '74

Use the Google machine, I found that image on Amazon, after sorting through dozens of LED versions first, search P54T bulb and see what you get.
As for the shield why remove it if the correct bulb fits behind it?, it's there for a reason. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
