Hello,

I was wondering how/if oil temp readings would vary when installing an oil temp sensor in one place vs another. On previous engines, I have used it in place of the drain plug. I have been getting somewhat lower readings with the sender mounted in the taco plate, but it’s a different engine.

Thanks.

think of a pot of water being brought to a boil The water is not perfectly all the same temperature because the heat being applied isn't even. Same for the sump, if you measure one spot close to where oil is coming back from the heads, the temperature will be different that a corner where there isn't much mixing. Same is true if you measure the temp in the case. Oil after the oil cooler isn't as hot as oil before the cooler. Oil draining down off the piston skirts and cylinder walls is a different temperature than oil coming off the main bearings.

Yeah, unless someone were to install senders all over the place and compare the readings in real time no one will know for sure, and even if you did would it matter?
The taco plate location is the most common on type 4's, readings there (if they are accurate or not) is the standard everyone uses, nobody has melted an engine due to oil heat when temps read within limits there so it must be close.

On type 1's I did try a few locations for senders at the same time, the sump plate always read 20* lower than the back of the sump to the right of the oil pump, the pickup tube gallery was really close to the back of the sump readings. The type 4 taco plate is almost the same location as the back RH corner of the sump on a type 1 so it's as good as it'll get without all sorts of specialised drilling.

Thanks,

It’s not that I’m looking for the best location or most accurate reading. It’s just that I have had the sender in the same location for decades so I know what the temps read when it’s hot, cold, pulling off the highway for a toll booth, etc. The readings only mean something for comparison with each other, I get it.

It just tends to read cooler in all conditions with the sensor at the taco plate. It doesn’t worry me. Just curious.

Those are nice. I just used the measurements and drilled a hole and secured with a nut. I had to grind a bit off so it would fit in the case. The drain plug thread was too small for the VDO sensor. Oil temp gauge was my first and only for many years. It was great for knowing when to back off.

Thanks.

do you have a dash gauge for oil temps?

I installed a tach into my right dash hole. I'm interested in monitoring temps, and was just wondering how I should read the data.
